Lessons in ancientart and cultureKWS Prep School students have beenenjoying insights into the ancientworld of Australian Indigenous artand culture.A special art lesson for Class 1A sawteacher Gemma Seedsman hand overthe teaching reins to KWS Indigenoussupport worker Corey McLean.Corey showed the children Indigenousart symbols and let them guess whatthey represented, before explainingthat Indigenous art pieces tell a story.Corey also played two traditionalIndigenous games (TIG) with thestudents of 1S, 1A, 2W and 2H.The first game was Gorri, asimulation hunting game which sawthe KWS kids ‘hunt’ kangaroo, emuand bird.Next came Mer Kolap, a gamefrom the Torres Strait which usuallyinvolves throwing a pebble onto alarger rock in the middle of a river.Corey and the children used a hoolahoop for the rock and bean bags forthe pebbles.The lessons were great funand a wonderful way to fosterunderstanding and appreciation ofour nation’s rich Indigenous culture.19
