Lessons in ancientart and culture<strong>KWS</strong> Prep <strong>School</strong> students have beenenjoying insights into the ancientworld of Australian Indigenous artand culture.A special art lesson for Class 1A sawteacher Gemma Seedsman hand overthe teaching reins to <strong>KWS</strong> Indigenoussupport worker Corey McLean.Corey showed the children Indigenousart symbols and let them guess whatthey represented, before explainingthat Indigenous art pieces tell a story.Corey also played two traditionalIndigenous games (TIG) with thestudents of 1S, 1A, 2W and 2H.The first game was Gorri, asimulation hunting game which sawthe <strong>KWS</strong> kids ‘hunt’ kangaroo, emuand bird.Next came Mer Kolap, a gamefrom the Torres Strait which usuallyinvolves throwing a pebble onto alarger rock in the middle of a river.Corey and the children used a hoolahoop for the rock and bean bags forthe pebbles.The lessons were great funand a wonderful way to fosterunderstanding and appreciation ofour nation’s rich Indigenous culture.19
