SENIOR SCHOOLInspired ExpressionExhibition celebrates creativityA wide array of sculpture,photography and painting sat sideby-sidewith textiles and industrialdesign in a stunning showcase ofcreativity when the 2013 HSC majorworks went on show at KWS.It was the first time major works fromHSC Visual Arts, Textiles and Design,and Industrial Technology subjectshad been exhibited together and itdrew a huge crowd of friends, familyand art and design aficionados to theDerek Pigot Auditorium.Among the creations on show werean ingenious sheep-handling crush,a dune buggy, stunning mixed mediaartworks and gorgeous gowns.The exhibition marked the last timethe works would be seen in publicbefore being handed over to theBoard of Studies for marking, sogood luck to all our creative Year12s.Pictured: Some of the brilliant pieces from our HSC Visual Arts, Textiles and Design, andIndustrial Technology students.12
Right royal win for buddingdesignerDesigning a dress fit for the Duchess of Cambridge isno easy task, but KWS student Sophie Aylward (picturedright) has done just that.Sophie and her fellow KWS Year 10 Textiles and Designclassmates took part in the Australia-wide Wool4Skoolcompetition this year, with Sophie being named the winner.The 16-year-old’s design was based on the theme ‘Dressa Royal’ and was chosen from among 1200 entries from230 schools.The design will now be made into reality by leadingAustralian designer and judge Jonathan Ward and featuredin a fashion spread in Girlfriend magazine.Sophie’s classmate Maggie Jarrett’s design was alsoselected as a finalist, with Maggie receiving a prize packfrom Girlfriend magazine.Wool4Skool is a design program tailored for theclassroom and proved a great fit for the KWS Textile andDesign program, which has a reputation for innovationand excellence.Pictured: Above L to R - Year 9 students Joe Yeomans, Jack Lamph, RobBragg and Mac Thomson.Woodwork students meetchallengeA group of KWS woodwork students showed off theirsuperior teamwork when they came second in a statewidecompetition recently.Rob Bragg, Mac Thompson, Jack Lamph and JoeYeomans are members of Robyn Youll's Year 9 IndustrialTechnology class and have just completed a semester ofwoodwork.The boys competed as a team in the 2013 IIATE (Instituteof Industrial Arts Technology Education) Wood ShowChallenge, held as part of an IIATE exhibition at theTimber & Working With Wood Show in Sydney.They made four tool carriers in the regional heat, beforemoving on to the state contest where they made twoshelves. The challenge placed a lot of emphasis onteamwork, while testing the boys’ project managementand practical skills.And there was another example of KWS talent andingenuity on show, as well: the boys were located nextdoor to an InTech display of top HSC works from 2012,which included the work of former KWS metal workstudent Peter Brooker.13
