LLW Repository LtdNational Waste ProgrammeNWP/REP/011Issue 2.1 – Jan 2013Page 15 of 584.2. VolumesThe total arisings of pond furniture waste within the NDA estate between 2012 and 2100are shown in Figure 3. A total volume of around 14315 m 3 of pond furniture is expected tobe generated during this period, which in the national context equates to 2% of the totalmetallic waste volume declared in the UKRWI 2010 [Ref. 8] or 3% of the total LLWRcapacity. The most significant volume of pond furniture waste is held by Sellafield Ltd. onthe Sellafield site, accounting for approximately 95% of the total volume. The Bradwell site(operated by Magnox Ltd.) has the smallest volume of waste, approximately 0.04% of thetotal, which reflects the fact that the majority of pond furniture waste arising at this site hasalready been retrieved and managed, owing to the maturity of the decommissioningprogramme. The remaining sites – Harwell (managed by RSRL) and Oldbury,Chapelcross, Dungeness A and Sizewell A (managed by Magnox Ltd.) – haveapproximately 1% of the pond furniture inventory respectively.Figure 3 – Total volume of pond furniture waste (m 3 ) within NDA estateTotal volume: 14315.41m 34.3. Waste typesPond furniture is metallic waste but consists of a variety of different types of metal. Figure4 shows the breakdown of waste types at the different sites. The waste identified at theMagnox Ltd. sites (Bradwell, Chapelcross, Dungeness A, Oldbury and Sizewell A)consists entirely of painted mild steel pond skips. The Sellafield waste inventory consistsof a mixture of mild steel and stainless steel, with the majority (approximately 95%) beingstainless steel. A proportion of the mild steel pond furniture at Sellafield is surface coated(painted). The greatest variation in waste type is seen at the Harwell site, where the wasteis a mixture of stainless steel (approximately 60% of the inventory), aluminium(approximately 31% of the inventory) and lead (9%).A company owned by UK Nuclear Waste Management LtdNOT PROTECTIVELY MARKED
