Technology summaries - p<strong>on</strong>d furniture management R&DThis secti<strong>on</strong> provides a brief summary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> technologies that have been or are currentlybeing investigated by NDA estate SLCs in R&D programmes.A significant effort has been expended <strong>on</strong> research <strong>and</strong> development into wastemanagement approaches for p<strong>on</strong>d furniture <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r c<strong>on</strong>taminated metals, particularlywith respect to dec<strong>on</strong>taminati<strong>on</strong> techniques. Table 12 provides an overview <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> keyresearch <strong>and</strong> development (both historical <strong>and</strong> current) pertinent to p<strong>on</strong>d furniture. Thisoverview includes:• A brief descripti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> technique.• Identificati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> key limitati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> c<strong>on</strong>straints in <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> technique.• Identificati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> any trials undertaken by SLCs into <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> technique.Any pertinent case study examples <strong>of</strong> this R&D – ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>on</strong> p<strong>on</strong>d furniture or analogouswastes – are also provided to illustrate <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> R&D <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> outcome <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>study.5.4. O<strong>the</strong>r p<strong>on</strong>d furniture waste management approachesA wide range <strong>of</strong> additi<strong>on</strong>al waste management practices have been developed within <strong>and</strong>outwith <strong>the</strong> NDA estate for <strong>the</strong> management <strong>of</strong> waste metals, which may have synergiesor applicability to <strong>the</strong> challenges posed by p<strong>on</strong>d furniture. As <strong>the</strong>se waste managementapproaches are not in routine usage by SLCs, nor are <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> specific R&D formanagement <strong>of</strong> p<strong>on</strong>d furniture, detailed informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>se techniques is not provided inthis document.Such techniques include:• Chemical dec<strong>on</strong>taminati<strong>on</strong> – bases <strong>and</strong> alkaline salts• Chemical dec<strong>on</strong>taminati<strong>on</strong> – bleaching• Chemical dec<strong>on</strong>taminati<strong>on</strong> – organic solvents• Electrochemical dec<strong>on</strong>taminati<strong>on</strong> – electropolishing / electrodeplating• Physical dec<strong>on</strong>taminati<strong>on</strong> – dry ice crystal blasting• Physical dec<strong>on</strong>taminati<strong>on</strong> – ice crystal blasting• Physical dec<strong>on</strong>taminati<strong>on</strong> – laser ablati<strong>on</strong>• Physical dec<strong>on</strong>taminati<strong>on</strong> – scarifying, scabbling <strong>and</strong> planing• Physical dec<strong>on</strong>taminati<strong>on</strong> – steam cleaning• Physical dec<strong>on</strong>taminati<strong>on</strong> – <strong>the</strong>rmal degradati<strong>on</strong>• Physical dec<strong>on</strong>taminati<strong>on</strong> – ultras<strong>on</strong>ic cleaningFur<strong>the</strong>r detailed informati<strong>on</strong> about <strong>the</strong>se waste management approaches is available <strong>on</strong><strong>the</strong> Envir<strong>on</strong>ment Agencies Requirements Working Group (EARWG) website [Ref. 14].A company owned by UK Nuclear Waste <strong>Management</strong> LtdNOT PROTECTIVELY MARKED
