Sellafield Ltd.Sellafield Ltd. is in the process of defining and developing a discrete strategy fordecommissioning of the Sellafield site, following on from the development ofDecommissioning Mandates undertaken during the latter half of 2000-2010. As aconsequence, the overall strategy for the management of pond furniture is underdevelopment. The situation at Sellafield is complicated by the diversity of the mission onthe site, particularly with regards to fuel storage ponds, as the facilities range from thosein active decommissioning (forming part of the risk / hazard reduction work ongoing onlegacy facilities) through to those currently still in active use to support commercialreprocessing operations [Ref. 13]. It is expected that the strategy for management of pondfurniture will continue to evolve as the mission of the site changes over time todecommissioning and site clearance. The current high-level strategy employed for themanagement of pond furniture at Sellafield involves size reduction, packaging anddisposal, with relatively little effort on treatment and diversion of waste. This is changing,with implementation of the National Strategy for LLW [Ref. 1] and other initiatives, togreater use of decontamination and technologies enabling re-use, re-cycle and diversionfrom disposal.The techniques employed or under consideration by Sellafield Ltd. for the management ofpond furniture include:• Size reduction• Direct disposal to LLWR• Direct disposal to GDF• Optimised disposal to LLWR• Physical decontamination• Metal melting5.1.3. Research Sites Restoration Ltd.The Harwell site, operated by RSRL, has one fuel storage pond facility which providedservices to the DIDO and PLUTO reactors. This fuel pond is in active decommissioning,with work to retrieve pond furniture wastes, draining of the pond liquors andcharacterisation of the pond structure [Ref. 11, 12]. Until recently, the strategy formanagement of pond furniture wastes arising from this facility was to size reduce (asnecessary), package the waste and transfer to LLWR for disposal. The greater availabilityof different waste routes to RSRL and the Harwell site have contributed to a shift in thisstrategy with a new approach being implemented to utilise waste treatment services (e.g.metal melting) to facilitate diversion of waste away from the LLWR.The techniques employed by RSRL for the management of pond furniture include:• Size reduction• Direct disposal to LLWR• Physical decontaminationA company owned by UK Nuclear Waste Management LtdNOT PROTECTIVELY MARKED
