In October of 1922 Heinrich Schul<strong>the</strong>is’sgroup moved to a former girls’ school in Gelnhaar. O<strong>the</strong>rs tried to return to <strong>the</strong>irprevious middle-class lives. The Habertshof settlement took over most of <strong>the</strong>book titles from <strong>the</strong> publishing house as well as <strong>the</strong> magazine, Das Neue Werk. TheSannerz household had been stripped virtually bare, <strong>the</strong> farm buildings emptied;two presumptuous young guests had even sold off <strong>the</strong> cattle to a livesock dealerat well below <strong>the</strong>ir real value. A small but resolute group was all that remained of<strong>the</strong> Sannerz community. 1<strong>Eberhard</strong> <strong>and</strong> Else wasted no time in picking up <strong>the</strong> pieces <strong>and</strong> continued <strong>the</strong>publishing work under <strong>the</strong> name Community Publishing House <strong>Eberhard</strong> <strong>Arnold</strong>. 2(After May 1924 <strong>the</strong> name would become <strong>the</strong> <strong>Eberhard</strong> <strong>Arnold</strong> PublishingHouse, Sannerz <strong>and</strong> Leipzig.) 3 The publishing work was crucial to <strong>the</strong> group’ssurvival, <strong>and</strong> its continuation was only possible because Kees Boeke wanted <strong>the</strong>money still available from his foundation to be used specifically for fur<strong>the</strong>ring<strong>the</strong> community <strong>and</strong> its publishing work in a pacifist <strong>and</strong> early Christian direction.Of what had once been a very attractive selection of Neuwerk books, only sixtitles remained with <strong>Eberhard</strong>’s publishing house: Max Bürck’s From StateChurches to a Religion for Humanity; Julius Goldstein’s Race <strong>and</strong> Politics, a bookon <strong>the</strong> roots <strong>and</strong> background of anti-Semitism, which attracted much attention;Eugen Jäckh’s Blumhardt Anthology; <strong>the</strong> Legends collection by Fritz Schloss;<strong>Eberhard</strong>’s pamphlet Love <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Life of Love; <strong>and</strong> lastly, Otto Herpel’s bookZinzendorf: On Faith <strong>and</strong> Life, to which he gave <strong>the</strong> Sannerz community <strong>the</strong>publishing rights. 4 At <strong>the</strong> beginning of 1923 a sad-looking Otto Herpel arrived
