THE OCCURRENCE ANDDATE OF THE TEXTThe text of this scripture occurs in Mahabharatha, thegrand Ithihasa poem composed by Vedavyasa. It is given in the13th book of the epic which is called Anusasana Parva (Thevolume of Commandments). It is given by Bhishma just afterthe Mahabharatha war. The composition of the bookMahabharatha is known as contemporary one with the war. Theauthor Vedavyasa was a contemporary of Mahabharatha war.Astrononomical calculations and internal evidences ofMahabharatha prove that the war took place in the beginning ofKaliyuga. Hence the composition of the present text is estimatedto have taken place by all scholars of tradition approximately5,117 years ago when calculated form 1978 A.D.The various opinions of historians about the date of theMahabharatha war contradict each other and cannot beconsidered as true.The infallible astronomical evidence of the dates whichtallies with the back dating of the various present calendersrenders the following facts:(1) Sri Krishna, the Lord and hero of this scripture wasborn in the year Sri Mukha, at the midnight time of the eighthmoon phase of the darker half of the lunar month Sraavana.This corresponds with the midnight between 19th and 20th ofJuly, 3228 B.C.(2) The Lord left his body in the Lunar year Pramaadhi afterthe sunrise of the Lunar new year’s day. February 3102 B.C. Bythat time the Lord was running His 126th year of age.(3) The Mahabharatha war was fought when the Lord warrunning His 89th year. This tallies with 3139 B.C.18
