2010-20112011Careers CounsellingThe role of the career counsellor in PascalEducationCareer counsellors serve as teachers, confidants, andadvisors to their students. Today's PASCAL school counsellorsare vital members of the education team. Thecounsellor is qualified to address all students’ academic, career development needs by designing, implementing, evaluating and enhancing a comprehensive counselingprogramme that promotes and enhances student success. How can career counselling help you?Meeting with the school counsellor will be an opportunityfor you to share your concerns. Your counselor willask you several questions to gain a better idea of howcareer counseling would most benefit you. Your counselormay ask you to answer different types of questionsto help identify your interests or personality preferences.Typically, students will then meet with thecounselor for two to four additional sessions; howeverthis is based on individual need. During these meetings, the career counselor will help you better understand allof the information that you learn about yourself andguide you in using this information to make a satisfyingchoice of major or occupation.Panayiotis Papadopoulos,Career CounsellorThe LibraryMy libraryThis is the sixth year in which ourschool library provides students andstaff access to a variety of resources. As Norman Cousins stated“The library is not a shrine for theworship of books. It is not a templewhere literacy incense must beburned or where one’s devotion to the bound booksis expressed in ritual. A library, to modify the famousmetaphor of Socrates, should be the delivery roomfor the birth of ideas-a place where history comes tolife”Our school library has the right document for everyneed and through the library’s activities such as TheAnnual Library Reading Competition, the Writer ofthe Month Competition, The Books Bazaar and TheScholastic Book Fair, students have the opportunityto use the library and improve their reading and writingskills. Why I should take part in the Library’s Competitions? Our library organizes two reading competitions a year:the Annual Library Reading Competition and the Writerof the Month Competition. In the Annual Library Reading Competition each studenttries to read as many books as he/she can throughoutthe competition, usually for six months. For each bookevery student produces a short summary. In the Writer of the Month Competition, each monthreading books by two set writers are promoted by thelibrary. The students who read the books written by theset writers will receive housepoints. Different writers, one for the upper school and one for the lower, are seteach month and are announced via the library noticeboard. The students who participate must write a summaryof each book they read and submit it to the librarian. Why you should take part in the Library’s Competitions?First of all you have the opportunity to learn languages(English, Greek, and French) in a pleasant way. Throughreading you increase your vocabulary, improve yourspelling and learn new things. Also, you could win a lotof nice presents such as books and certificates whichyou could use in your university applications. The summary you write help you to give the overallmeaning of the book and this will help you in the searchof articles and writing abstracts for you assignments atuniversity. After all, any user could find the right book.
