In 1980/1981, and 1990/1991, the majority of female household heads werenever married, except for two of the three countries where high proportions of women weremarried (Belize and Trinidad and Tobago). Less than a quarter were married, and 20 per centor less were divorced. These percentages are in sharp contrast to male household heads, whowere typically married (45 to 70 per cent), often never married (30 to 49 per cent) and rarelypreviously married or separated (10 per cent or less).26
