Subject: Language ArtsLesson Title: Writing, Football and YouGoals/Objectives:• Formulate writing ideas and identify a topic appropriate to the purpose and audience.• Determine the usefulness of organizers and apply appropriate pre-writing tasks.• Use revision strategies to improve the style, variety of sentence structure, clarity ofthe controlling idea, logic, effectiveness of word choice and transitions betweenparagraphs, passages, or ideas.• Edit to improve sentence fluency, grammar and usage.• Apply tools to judge the quality of writing.National Standards met: Language Arts - 3F, 8F, 8E, 8G, 9G, 12F, 7E, 6G, 6H, 6F, 12GMethods/Procedures:• Students will bring in the sports section of various newspapers to examine the type,style and subject matter dealt within several publications.• As a beginning activity, students will all read the same article chosen by the teacher.The article will be representative of the ‘typical’ football themed piece of writing foundon a weekly if not daily basis in the local newspaper.• After reading the article as a class, the teacher will list on the board what studentsidentify as the theme of the article. ‘What was the author’s purpose in writing thisarticle?’• Second, the teacher will list the main points students identify from the football newsarticle.• Vocabulary that is vital to an understanding of the article will be listed on the boardand students, as a class, will come to a consensus as to definition.• The teacher will next pass out a writing prompt, specifically chosen. Themes canrange from, player conduct, salary, steroid use, drug abuse, fitness, angermanagement problems, player and coach relationships, role modeling, rivalries andmedia relations.• After a brief discussion on the prompt and requirements, students will respond to theprompt and be prepared to read their response to the class.LANGUAGE ARTSMaterials:• Newspaper articles• Writing Prompts• Headlines• Access to the Internet• Access to Patriots’ website at patriots.comAssessment:• Students will submit their newspaper articles based on prompts given by instructor.• Students will choose one ‘headline’ to write an article.• Students will deliver a formal presentation on their chosen article and/or prompt.• The teacher will also display each student’s articles.New England Patriots Edition 27 Pro Football Hall of Fame Educational Outreach Program
