Students use Pentax manual-focus cameras to shootassignments covering the basics of composition, depth of field, people, and night photography in various locations. Students alsodevelop and print their work using the school darkroom. Students are introduced to ADOBE PhotoShop by scanning and colorizing afavorite negative, and keep portfolios of their work. This class is taught with a "learning by doing" philosophy; 85 percent of class timeis lab and about 15 percent is lecture, textbook, and demonstrations.PHOTOGRAPHY 2.5 credit Prerequisite: Photography 1 (passed with a C or better) Fee: materials fee (see page 9 for additional information) CVHS Credit: applied art OUS Credit: nonePhotography 2 is an opportunity for students to apply concepts from Photography 1, and to learn new techniques. In-camera, digital,and darkroom manipulation of images will be covered. Emphasis is placed on producing consistent results and gaining mastery of theelements of design common to artists and designers. Students study the expressive and documentarypurposes of photography and complete a series of highly individualized assignments. Alternative photographic processes such asPolaroid transfer and non-silver emulsions will be available. Students will have an opportunity to participate in a public showing of theirwork.GRAPHIC DESIGN 1.5 credit Prerequisite: none Fee: materials fee (see page 9 for additional information) CVHS Credit: applied art OUS Credit: noneThis class is an introduction to the concepts, techniques and tools that graphic designers use to solve design problems. While this is ahands-on class, students also devote time to learning how to think and see like designers. Students will learn how to get (or find)ideas, and how to use the elements and principles of design to make them look professional. Students will learn to use three majordesign-related computer programs that are used to make, edit, and animate images, using Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia, Freehand,and Director. Students should expect, in addition to computer work, to engage in a range of activities: sketching (yes, you can sketch!),taking and editing pictures, making models, and screen printing T-shirts. The materials fee will pay for sketch books and a blankT-shirt.GRAPHIC DESIGN 2.5 credit Prerequisite: Graphic Design 1 (passed with B or better) Fee: materials fee (see page 9 for additional information) CVHS Credit: elective OUS Credit: noneBuild on your knowledge from Graphic Design 1. Advanced students will tackle complex design problems and learn additional tools toaid their work. Students will pursue deeper understanding of graphic processes and elements such as type and color. At least oneopportunity to engage with working designers in the community will be provided in the form of critique, shadowing, or internship.
