In this course students will use AdobePhotoshop, the dominant application for digital imaging, to edit, enhance or restore both digital and film-based photographs. Studentswill also explore the capabilities of Photoshop as a painting tool through the creation of backgrounds and interfaces for web pages andmultimedia projects. Although there will be opportunities for individual projects, students should expect to spend considerable timegaining a solid understanding of Photoshop. Lectures, demonstrations, and tutorials will be important parts of instruction. While thisclass is suitable for beginners, prospective students should enjoy computers and be comfortable with their use.DIGITAL IMAGING 2.5 credit Prerequisite: Digital Imaging 1 (passed with a B or better) CVHS Credit: applied art OUS Credit: none Extended App: Extended Application opportunity availableWith a solid grounding in Photoshop, students are ready to learn the fine points of the program, such as masks, channels, and colorcorrection, and to take on more challenging problems. Students will also deepen their understanding of digital photography and willexplore alternative uses of other input devices such as video and scanners. The study of motion graphics will continue through the useof Adobe ImageReady. At least one opportunity to engage with working designers in the community will be provided in the form ofcritique, shadowing, or internship.RECORDING, ENGINEERING AND MIXING.5 credit Prerequisites: grades 10 – 12 AND instructor approval CVHS Credit: applied art OUS Credit: noneThis course will instruct students in the basics of using computer-based technology to record and mix music. Students will work with avariety of sounds and sound files including digital audio, MIDI, and virtual instruments. Students will be encouraged to record their ownmusic, but there will also be pre-recorded songs and tracks available for students who are not musicians. The course will coversampling theory, analog vs. digital audio, recording and engineering techniques, audio effects (including reverb, echo, EQ, andcompression), mixing, and pre-mastering. Students will work in ProTools LE as well as other mainstream digital audio programs.FILMMAKING1 credit Prerequisite: grades 11 – 12 CVHS Credit: applied art OUS Credit: noneThere's never been a more exciting time for independent filmmakers. Digital video cameras, powerful personal computers and greatsoftware have opened endless possibilities in this important form of communication and artistic expression. Students in this classparticipate in every phase of the process: brainstorming story ideas, scriptwriting, planning productions, shooting video, recordingaudio, and editing. Accordingly, we'll cover a lot of ground – from film history, genres, analysis and vocabulary, to cinematography andsound design. Projects include short, persuasive pieces, music videos, and longer projects with an experimental or narrative structure.Most of the work is conducted in a group, but each student will also design and complete an individual project. This course is intendedfor students who are willing to devote significant amounts of effort, including work outside of class, to deepening their understandingand enjoyment of film.- 18 -
