The invisible hand
JEC understands that clients need total continuity in their business

Additions and Alterations (A&A) works require an exceptional
range of technical and project management capabilities. JEC’s
teams have the skills to plan and schedule, liaise with all parties,
undertake rapid upgrades, prepare for contingencies, cope with the
unexpected, and implement complex technical solutions to meet
multiple constraints in space and time.
Planning and rapid execution
At Exchange Square in Hong Kong, after conducting site surveys
to understand the installation requirements for each floor, the JEC
team worked closely with the property management and occupants
to plan and prepare for the upgrade works. Photos were taken of
each area so that at the end of the upgrade every single item could
be replaced in its original position in the offices.
Many A&A project locations require that there be minimal or zero
interruption to normal business operations. This may involve
working non-office hours.
At Exchange Square, an intense 60-hour upgrade was necessary
for a total of 77 floors, so the JEC team put in repeated non-stop
shifts from close of work Friday to first thing Monday morning to
meet the requirement.
Silent partner
Some businesses operate around the clock and yet still can’t
compromise on quality. When JEC was asked to upgrade the airconditioning
system at the world-renowned Hong Kong Mandarin
Oriental, meticulous joint planning ensured that hotel guests
enjoyed their usual exceptional levels of comfort in terms of not only
temperature, but also humidity, air flow, indoor air quality, odour and
noise levels.
Technical excellence
Some of the most technically demanding A&A projects are in
environments where service downtime is not an option. The
baggage handling system at Hong Kong International Airport is
one of the most sophisticated and reliable in the world, handling
80,000 items of baggage a day. When the Hong Kong Airport
Authority (HKAA) needed to upgrade mechanical, electrical and
control elements of the system, JEC planned the complex and
critical operation. Many stages were only possible in a tight time
window after 12 midnight, yet availability of all services had to
be assured at 5 am, in time for the first flight arrivals. The project
delivered the sophisticated integration and service levels that
HKAA had requested.
