APPLESAUCE CAKE<br />

1/2 C shortening<br />

1 C sugar<br />

1/2 t cinnamon<br />

1/2 t cloves<br />

1/2 t ginger<br />

Cream shortening and sugar together, and add the spices.<br />

2 T hot water<br />

1 t soda<br />

1 C applesauce<br />

1 C raisins<br />

Nuts, if desired<br />

2 C flour<br />

Mix hot water, soda and applesauce together. Beat to white froth.<br />

Add this to first mixture. Add 1 cup raisins (nuts also if desired)<br />

and the flour. Bake in moderate oven. --Mrs. C. I. Casey.<br />

Note:--Mrs. E. Quenten uses 11/4 C applesauce, 11/2 T hot water and<br />

21/2 C flour.<br />

A CANADA WAR CAKE<br />

(Butterless, Eggless, Milkless)<br />

2 C brown sugar<br />

2 C hot water<br />

2 T lard<br />

1 t cloves<br />

1/2 pkg. seedless raisins<br />

3 C flour<br />

1 t soda<br />

1 t salt<br />

1 t cinnamon<br />

Boil all ingredients five minutes after they begin to bubble. When<br />

cold, add flour, and soda, dissolved in 1 t hot water. <strong>This</strong> cake is<br />

better at the end of a week or even longer.--Mrs. C. I. Casey.
