1 C granulated sugar<br />

1/2 C butter<br />

1 t soda dissolved in<br />

1/4 C boiling black coffee<br />

1 t cinnamon<br />

1 t cloves<br />

1 t allspice<br />

1 1/2 C flour<br />

1 C raisins<br />

1/2 C nutmeats, if desired<br />

RAISIN CAKE<br />

2 1/2 T butter<br />

3 T sugar<br />

1 C molasses<br />

Yolk 1 egg<br />

2 C flour<br />

1 t soda<br />

1 t cinnamon<br />

1 t cloves<br />

1 C hot water<br />

Bake in layers. Put together with raisin filling. Ice with boiled<br />

frosting to which raisins have been added.--Mrs. Kruckman.<br />

WASHINGTON PIE<br />

1/3 C shortening<br />

3/4 C sugar<br />

1/2 C milk<br />

1/4 t salt<br />

1 1/2 C flour (Swans Down)<br />

2 eggs, beaten light<br />

3 t baking powder<br />

1 t vanilla<br />

Cream the butter, add the sugar gradually and cream. Add the eggs.<br />

Sift the flour, measure, add baking powder and sift again. Add milk<br />

and flour alternately to first mixture, beating hard. Add vanilla.
