DEVILS FOOD CAKE<br />

1 C white sugar<br />

1/4 C butter<br />

1 egg<br />

1 level t soda in 1/4 C sour milk<br />

1 1/4 C flour & 1/2 t baking powder<br />

Add to the above, but do not stir in:<br />

2 squares Baker's Chocolate in 1/2 C boiling water.<br />

Pour around edge of bowl and gradually work all ingredients<br />

together. Add 1 t vanilla. --Mrs. M. H. Miller.<br />

HOT WATER CHOCOLATE CAKE<br />

2 T butter<br />

1 C granulated sugar<br />

1 egg<br />

2 squares chocolate<br />

3/4 t soda<br />

1 rounded t baking powder<br />

1 1/2 C flour<br />

1 t vanilla<br />

1 C boiling water<br />

Dissolve chocolate in half the cup of boiling water and the soda in<br />

the other half. Mix in order given and bake in a square loaf thirty<br />

minutes. Mrs. V. L. Gerred.<br />

Note: Mrs. Nellie Ray uses 1 C sour milk instead of boiling water.<br />
