9.2 Starting and stopping the server<br />

This section describes the menus and commands you can use to start and stop the server.<br />

You need to start the Community Edition server before you can work <strong>with</strong> Community<br />

Edition and the administrative console. To make server configuration changes, you<br />

sometimes need to stop the server first. Starting and stopping the server is performed<br />

through platform-dependent scripts.<br />

9.2.1 Starting the server<br />

On Windows, to start the Community Edition server, follow these steps:<br />

1. Click Start->All Programs.<br />

2. Select IBM <strong>WebSphere</strong>-> <strong>Application</strong> <strong>Server</strong> Community Edition.<br />

3. Click Start the server.<br />

On Linux, follow these steps:<br />

1. Change the current directory into /bin, where is the<br />

installation directory of the Community Edition server.<br />

2. Run startup.sh.<br />

3. When the server is started, a message similar to “Geronimo started in background.<br />

PID: 1000” shows up. The process number PID will be different each time.
