1.7 Related free products: DB2 Express-C and IBM Data Studio<br />

Most applications require some sort of persistent storage for the application data. IBM<br />

provides a database product that is a perfect complement to the Community Edition<br />

application server: DB2 Express-C. DB2 Express-C is the free version of DB2. The "C" in<br />

its name stands for "Community". DB2 Express-C delivers performance, reliability,<br />

scalability and security to Community Edition applications. DB2 Express-C is well suited for<br />

the new breed of Web-based Java applications that need to work <strong>with</strong> XML data. It<br />

provides a unique hybrid relational-XML database server that delivers excellent<br />

performance for both traditional relational, and XML data.<br />

Like Community Edition, DB2 Express-C is available at no charge for development and<br />

production deployment. It can be redistributed as part of an overall solution <strong>with</strong>out any<br />

royalty charges. Optional support and subscription is available for a low per server yearly<br />

charge. DB2 Express-C is built on the same product code as the rest of the DB2 server<br />

portfolio; therefore, an application written to run on DB2 Express-C is guaranteed to run on<br />

any other DB2® for Linux®, UNIX®, and Windows® server. In most cases, the application<br />

will also run unchanged <strong>with</strong> DB2 for z/OS® mainframe and DB2 for i5/OS® midrange<br />

database servers. In other words, DB2 Express-C delivers unprecedented range of<br />

scalability for your application.<br />

DB2 Express-C comes <strong>with</strong> a free IBM Data Studio, an Eclipse-based development and<br />

administration tool that will be very familiar to most Community Edition users and will make<br />

you instantly productive. IBM Data Studio IDE in conjunction <strong>with</strong> DB2 Express-C can be<br />

used to publish industry standard SOAP/XML and RESTfull Web services as a means of<br />

accessing data in DB2.<br />

DB2 Express-C is available for 32 and 64-bit Linux, 32 and 64-bit Windows, Solaris x64,<br />

and 64-bit Linux for POWER® servers. A beta version is also available for Apple Mac OS
