Inspiration MELAKA Melaka Airport: Where History Meets Modernity With flights to three destinations - Penang, Pekan Baru Indonesia and Kota Bharu - offered by Malindo Air, the traffic flow in Melaka Airport is observed to be consistent. The flights to the aforementioned locations have changed to four times a week since September 2015. Melaka Airport plans to extend its runway from 2,135m to 2,500m to accommodate larger aircraft and maximise the number of passenger. Due to its strategic location, Melaka is also known for its medical tourism where most of the passengers fly in from Pekan Baru, Indonesia to seek medical treatments at its well-known private hospitals. Melaka Airport offers free car park which is only a short distance away from the terminal. A Place of Many Wonders What to do when in Melaka? Melaka now has new attractions to visit such as THE SHORE (a sky/glass bridge view of Melaka from atop and Sky Restaurant), a few theme parks that include Bayou Lagoon,Wonderland and Gold Coast Melaka, BUSTEL (an old bus converted into hotel) at Pantai Klebang and Masjid Selat. That said, make a visit to some of the already wellknown attraction places too! 82
A’Famosa At the beginning of the 16th-century, Portuguese colonialists began to establish outposts in Macau, China and India. Melaka’s increasing popularity meant that it was quickly becoming a key link for Portugal and the Spice Route in China. In 1511, the Portuguese armada under the command of Alfonso de Albuquerque arrived and launched an onslaught on the armies of the Melaka Sultanate and defeated them. Albuquerque then moved swiftly by building a stronghold around a hill near the sea. He used 1,500 slaves to construct the A’Famosa Fortress as a shield against other foreign invaders. Although the settlement used to spread out across the hillside, now only a single gate – Porta de Santiago – remains. Known as one of the oldest continental architectural remnants in Asia, A’Famosa is possibly Melaka’s most famous tourist attraction and definitely more than just a quick stop for brief photo sessions. Inspiration Melaka Heritage Trail If travellers are right in the heart of Melaka’s old city, they can begin their journey at the Tourist Information Office. Considering one is unsure on the locations of the many local attractions, tourists should grab the ‘Melaka Street Map’ for a small fee. Once you have left the steps of the information centre, travellers will immediately come face to face with one of Melaka’s most famous landmarks, namely the Dutch Square which houses the Christ Church and Stadhuys. The Dutch Square is irrefutably Melaka’s most picturesque spot. Located along Jalan Kota, it is highly distinguishable by a group of maroon Dutch buildings and colourful trishaws that dot its streets. Christ Church was built because the Dutch had limited places for worship other than St. Paul’s Church – a small chapel on St. Paul’s Hill. When the British later ruled Melaka, they added a weathercock and bell to Christ Church and transformed the Anglican Church into a Protestant one. Albeit a small building, the church features dim fixtures, charming wooden pews and an imposing crucifix hanging on the wall. Entrance is free but you may be charged for taking photos of the interior. Next door to the church is the Stadhuys. Built in 1650 by the Dutch as a municipal town hall and Governor’s residence, Stadhuys has undergone multiple makeovers during its lifetime and now serves as the Museum of History and Ethnography which showcases Melakan customs and the city’s rich past including the Malay Sultanate and Western occupations. Jonker Street Melaka is internationally known to offer harmonious amalgamations of both old and new Eastern and Western architectures. Jonker Street is the perfect place to experience these mixtures and remains the central hub for tourists seeking both sightseeing and shopping opportunities. Heralded as one of the best night markets in the country, Jonker Walk Night Market showcases rows upon rows of well-organised stalls where hawkers invite purchasers to take a look at their affordable merchandise. As the night markets only take place on Friday and Saturday nights, tourists are also spoilt for choice in terms of the many bustling bars and restaurants along the streets. During the day, travellers should make a beeline for the Baba-Nyonya Heritage Museum which is a collection of three spectacularly restored yesteryear townhouses resembling quintessential 19th-century ‘Peranakan’ residences. Built in 1896, the houses were refurbished and transformed into a museum years later. Connected by a covered footway, the museum offers intricately hand-painted tiles, stunning carved teakwood swing doors and Greco-Roman columns plus traditional red lanterns. 83
