This Vocationally Related
Qualification (VRQ) is primarily
designed to engage and motivate
aged 14 to 19 year olds who are
interested in learning about the
maintenance of light vehicles, the
various roles that are available in
the retail motor industry, and would
therefore like a qualification that will
support their progress into the retail
motor vehicle industry.
There are no formal entry
requirements for this qualification.
However selection criteria for
entry should take into account
each applicant’s existing academic/
vocational qualifications, experience,
and interest in working in the
industry sectors.

The learning programme involves
students studying both the theory
and practical aspects of the essential
knowledge and skills required
by today’s motor vehicle repair
industry. Learners also gain a broad
knowledge and understanding of
health and safety in the workplace
and other skills associated with
working in a garage.
This qualification also includes
the option of selecting Applied
Units. These units offer a breadth
of learning where the criteria are
contextualised for the retail motor
industry. The Applied Units include:
S2: Vehicle Science
M2: Vehicle Maths
ICT2: ICT for Vehicle Repair
EE2: Vehicle Electric & Electronics

This VRQ offers an ideal step to the
Vocational Competence Qualification
(VCQ) for those who are employed,
and wish to continue with their
studies, as the knowledge at Level 3
meets that of the related VCQ.
This qualification is designed to
provide a standardised approach for
the delivery and assessment of the
knowledge and skills requirements.
This VRQ also provides the
knowledge requirements for
its related VCQ and forms the
knowledge component of the
IMI SSC Maintenance and Repair
Advanced Apprenticeship framework
(for Light Vehicle).
Achievers of this VRQ can use it
as credit against the knowledge
required for the corresponding VCQ.
Progression
When an apprentice has achieved
a L3 Apprenticeship, they can then
choose to broaden their education
and training in other ways from this
firm base.
