Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC)
activated its Emergency
Operations Center (EOC)
on January 22, 2016 to take
action on the rising number
of birth defects and Barré
syndrome in areas affected
by Zika and Zika outbreaks in
the counties of America. The
World Health Organization
(WHO) declared a Public
Health Emergency of
International Concern
(PHEIC) on February 1,
2016, due to the reports
of microcephaly and other
neurological disorders in the
Zika affected areas. CDC
elevated its EOC activation
to the highest level, a Level 1
on February 8, 2016.
According to the CDC, there
are 52 Travel associated
cases have been found in
the US states, but no local
vector-borne virus cases
have been reported in the
country.
Zika virus is transmitted
mainly through the bite of
an infected Aedes species
mosquito (A. aegypti and A.
Albopictus). There are rare
chances of transmission of
the virus through mother to
child, during delivery. The
virus can also be spread
through sexual contact, and
blood transfusion.
