activated its Emergency<br />

Operations Center (EOC)<br />

on January 22, <strong>2016</strong> to take<br />

action on the rising number<br />

of birth defects and Barré<br />

syndrome in areas affected<br />

by Zika and Zika outbreaks in<br />

the counties of America. The<br />

World Health Organization<br />

(WHO) declared a Public<br />

Health Emergency of<br />

International Concern<br />

(PHEIC) on February 1,<br />

<strong>2016</strong>, due to the reports<br />

of microcephaly and other<br />

neurological disorders in the<br />

Zika affected areas. CDC<br />

elevated its EOC activation<br />

to the highest level, a Level 1<br />

on February 8, <strong>2016</strong>.<br />

According to the CDC, there<br />

are 52 Travel associated<br />

cases have been found in<br />

the US states, but no local<br />

vector-borne virus cases<br />

have been reported in the<br />

country.<br />

Zika virus is transmitted<br />

mainly through the bite of<br />

an infected Aedes species<br />

mosquito (A. aegypti and A.<br />

Albopictus). There are rare<br />

chances of transmission of<br />

the virus through mother to<br />

child, during delivery. The<br />

virus can also be spread<br />

through sexual contact, and<br />

blood transfusion.<br />
