The first attack of Chhatrapati Shivaji was on<br />

the Fort of Torna, at the age of nineteen. It is<br />

about twenty km far away from Puna.<br />

him a fake message of peace<br />

to persuade Shivaji to meet<br />

He tore open Afzal Khan’s<br />

stomach with steel points,<br />

and stabbed him in his back,<br />

like, Singhagarh, Chakan<br />

Kondana, Rajgad and<br />

Purandar forts. Bijapur sultan<br />

arrested the father of Shivaji<br />

due to the rise of Shivaji’s<br />

power. Shivaji had occupied<br />

the fort of Javali and the<br />

northern part of Konkon<br />

in 1655, after rescuing his<br />

father from the prison of<br />

Bijapur sultan.<br />

Aurangzeb, a Mughal<br />

emperor sent Dilip Khan and<br />

Jai Singh to stop Shivaji. He<br />

was forced to sign the treaty<br />

of Purander, due to which, he<br />

had to give nearly 24 forts to<br />

the Mughal kings. Aurangzeb<br />

invited him to Agra and jailed<br />

him in there. He returned to<br />

his Kingdom after escaping<br />

from Agra. Shivaji recaptured<br />

the forts, those he lost due to<br />

the treaty of Purander.<br />

Shivaji was the head of<br />

his administration. He<br />

had eight members in his<br />

administration to help. He<br />

has given the freedom to<br />

choose any religion in his<br />

empire. He had never<br />

collected taxes forcefully.<br />

Shivaji had built a strong<br />

army and is known as the<br />

“Father of Indian Navy”. He<br />

also introduced the guerrilla<br />

warfare tactics.<br />

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj<br />

died on April 3, 1680 after<br />

suffering fever for 3 weeks,<br />

but the Marathas continued<br />

their struggle against the<br />

Mughal emperors under his<br />

successors.<br />
