The first attack of Chhatrapati Shivaji was on
the Fort of Torna, at the age of nineteen. It is
about twenty km far away from Puna.

for a battle. He had fitted

He tore open Afzal Khan’s
stomach with steel points,
and stabbed him in his back,
as he was attacked.

captured some other forts
like, Singhagarh, Chakan
Kondana, Rajgad and
Purandar forts. Bijapur sultan
arrested the father of Shivaji
due to the rise of Shivaji’s
power. Shivaji had occupied
the fort of Javali and the
northern part of Konkon
in 1655, after rescuing his
father from the prison of
Bijapur sultan.
Aurangzeb, a Mughal
emperor sent Dilip Khan and
Jai Singh to stop Shivaji. He
was forced to sign the treaty
of Purander, due to which, he
had to give nearly 24 forts to
the Mughal kings. Aurangzeb
invited him to Agra and jailed
him in there. He returned to
his Kingdom after escaping
from Agra. Shivaji recaptured
the forts, those he lost due to
the treaty of Purander.
Shivaji was the head of
his administration. He
had eight members in his
administration to help. He

has given the freedom to
choose any religion in his
empire. He had never
collected taxes forcefully.
Shivaji had built a strong
army and is known as the
“Father of Indian Navy”. He
also introduced the guerrilla
warfare tactics.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
died on April 3, 1680 after
suffering fever for 3 weeks,
but the Marathas continued
their struggle against the
Mughal emperors under his
successors.
