El presidente Obama quiere ser el

se presenten allí.
Pero el hombre que quiere hacer historia
por ir a Cuba necesita una lección de
la historia de Cuba.
La apertura a Cuba hace más de un año
fue sacada de una novela de Graham
Greene, con reuniones muy secretas,
espías y personajes oscuros, y aun con
la intervención divina por el Vaticano.

President Obama wants to be the
first sitting president to visit Havana
since Calvin Coolidge in 1928,
and plans to go on March 21, a day after
the Rolling Stones play there.
But the man who wants to make history
by going to Cuba needs a lesson in Cuban
history.
The opening to Cuba just over a year
ago was out of a novel by Graham
Greene, with hush-hush meetings, spies
and shady characters, and even divine
intervention by the Vatican. I welcomed
it, as did many Cuban-Americans. Relations
between my two countries have
remained frozen since the Cold War,
and a thaw is long overdue.
Obama’s initial approach was a shrewd
one. He agreed to remove Cuba from
the terrorist watch list and open an embassy.
But these changes were more
symbolic than substantive. Cuba can’t
afford to provide sheets to patients in
state-run hospitals, much less fund terrorists,
and the U.S. Interests Section
was an embassy in all but name. Real
concessions, such as lifting the embargo,
would come only if Cuba opened
up its repressive society, which remains
mired in the Soviet era. Obama then
dangled a delicious carrot to the geriatric
Castro brothers, offering to visit the
island if progress was made on human
rights.
But the reverse is true. In fact, as reported
by The Washington Post, in 2015 there
were more than 8,616 documented political
arrests in Cuba, as compared to
2,074 arrests in 2010 and 4,123 in 2011.
Christian Solidarity Worldwide documented
2,300 violations of religious
freedom compared to 220 in 2014. The
Castros had released 53 political prisoners
as a gesture in December 2014, but
most of them have been re-arrested, and
five have been given long-term prison
sentences. And Cuba has yet to allow
a visit by the International Committee
of the Red Cross or U.N. human rights
monsters, as it had promised.
In addition, Cubans are leaving the island
in record numbers, often by way

Except there’s another reason. Deputy
National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes
gave a clue when he said, “the guiding
principle of our Cuba policy ... remains
taking steps that will improve the lives
of the Cuban people.”
But throughout history, American
efforts to improve the lives of the Cuban
people, often well-meaning if rarely disinterested,
have led to fiascos like the
Bay of Pigs.
Rhodes notes that Obama’s visit will be
rather different than Silent Cal’s trip to
Havana in 1928, but there are alarming
similarities. Coolidge went to prop up
the corrupt, brutal regime of Gerardo
Machado, who did more than anyone
else to destroy the institutions of the Cuban
republic. But it backfired, and Machado
was thrown out in a gruesome revolt
in 1933 in which bloodthirsty mobs
roamed the streets of Havana and the
dictator’s henchmen were hung from
streetlights. Hemingway was there, and
he wrote about it in “To Have and Have
Not.”
Machado’s successor was handpicked
by the American ambassador, Sumner
Welles. He was an obscure sergeant
named Fulgencio Batista, who led a
barracks revolt that ended Cuban democracy,
effectively ruling until Castro
swept into power in 1959.

Castro was another losing bet. Students
of Cuban history know that toward the
end of the revolution, he was backed by
the U.S. Castro did not defeat Batista
militarily, but holed up in the mountains,
giving Trumpish interviews to
fanboy reporters like Herbert Matthews
of The New York Times. Batista threw
in the towel only when the U.S. withdrew
its support and stopped sending
him guns and ammo.
Cubans have long memories. It was
support for venal thugs like Machado
and Batista, fueled by U.S. business
interests, that spawned the virulent anti-
Americanism that Castro was able to
exploit when he turned the tables on the
U.S. and declared himself to be a communist.
No-drama Obama has caused a ruckus
by offering a carrot with no stick. If his
visit enables the Castro brothers, who’ll
soon join Machado and Batista in the
dustbin of history, then it will be deja vu
all over again.
At best it’s a gamble, but the U.S. lost
big when it rolled the dice with Machado,
Batista and Castro.
Rhodes said that Obama would meet
with dissidents in Havana, but Secretary
of State John Kerry just canceled
his warm-up trip, apparently due to
disagreements over which ones he will
meet, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The spectacle of the U.S. haggling
over this is deeply troubling, and creates
a terrible precedent for future negotiations
with the Cuban government.
Don’t go to Cuba, Mr. President.

undeniably waned.
On Super Tuesday, the first day of
Women’s History Month, female
voters countered this speculation
with action, helping Clinton
emerge victorious in seven states
to Bernie Sanders’ four.
Women made all the difference in
Clinton’s domination of Virginia,
Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia,
Arkansas, Texas and Massachusetts.
The candidate won women by a
15-point margin in Massachusetts;
about a 2:1 ratio in Georgia,
Virginia and Texas; and secured
the votes of two-thirds or more
women in Alabama, Tennessee
and Arkansas, ABC News reported
Tuesday.
African-Americans and women

Clinton’s campaign is a historic
accomplishment in and of itself.
The candidate has overcome
plenty of unwarranted, sexist
attacks during her time in the public
eye, but has still triumphed
to become the first woman to win
the Iowa caucus and arguably
the closest woman to become the
nation’s first female president.
While the candidate didn’t secure
her party’s nomination on Super
Tuesday, as some speculated
she might, that goal is now well
within her reach.
“The stakes of this election have
never been higher,” she said to
supporters in Miami Tuesday
night, according to the Los Angeles
Times. “The rhetoric we’re
hearing on the other side has never
been lower. Trying to divide
America between us and them is
wrong and we are not going to let
it work. Whether we like it or not,
we are all in this
together.”

minutes later, and introduces
himself to Mr. Connor. Mr. Connor
says, “There must be some
mistake.” Mr. Lowery reassures
him that they spoke by phone. Mr.
Connor asked Mr. Lowery to wait
while he checked if the apartment
is still available. Mr. Connor returns
a few minutes later and said
that he just called the owner and
the apartment is no longer available.
Example 2: Mr. Martin and Mrs.
Vernon are married. Mr. Martin is
white and Mrs. Vernon is African
American. They are looking to
buy an apartment in a cooperative
owned building. They signed
a contract and must meet with
the board of the building for final
approval. Mr. Martin has been
responsible for all the details of the
transaction and the building owner,
the managing agent, and the
chairman had informed him personally
they have no problem get-
ting the authorization of the board.
Mrs. Vernon comes to the interview
first, and the president of the board
informs her that she is in the wrong
place. She insists that she is not, and
she introduces herself as the wife
of Mr. Martin. The chairman of the
board acts surprised. During the interview,
a member of the board asks
Mr. Martin and Ms. Vernon if they
had to face hostility because of their
“mixed” marriage and whether this
has affected their children. Finally,
they don’t get the approval of the
board.
Example 3: Ms. Abernanthy, an African
American, sees an apartment
she likes. She then calls the realtor,
Mr. Davis, and tells him she wishes
to rent the apartment. Mr. Davis
informs her that the apartment is
rented. Ms. Abernanthy suspects
and asks her friend, who is white
to try to rent the apartment.
Her friend goes to the real estate
agency and talks with Mr.
Davis who informs her that the
apartment is still available. Miss.
Abernanthy again called Mr.
Davis and confronts him. He
admits that he lied, but said that
was not due to her race, but the
owner was not happy with her
because he thought her personality
was too “aggressive” and
“insistent”.

behavior is not always obvious
and direct, but remember that it

composed of volatile organic
compounds (VOCs) into the

where users can breathe them
in. In industrial settings, proper

have to wear protective gear
to minimize exposure to similar
UFP and VOC levels—but
nowadays anyone can buy or
borrow a desktop 3D printer
and use it at home or in school
without taking any extra precautions.
One study, as reported on
Phys.org, equated the effects of
printing a small 3D item to smoking
a cigarette indoors. Effects
can include nausea and headaches,
particularly for those with
pre-existing heart or respiratory
problems.
A fully enclosed 3D printing
system could mitigate exposure
issues, but the major 3D printer
manufacturers have yet to license
the valuable patent held by
one company to make this technology
widely available. Until
then, it’s up to users to make sure
to operate desktop 3D printers in
a well-ventilated area.

La Corte Suprema de

puesto un desafío a las

La corte anunció recientemente

verbales en el caso U.S v
Texas el lunes, 18 de abril. La
corte puede tomar una decisión
tan temprano como junio,
tomando decisiones en
aspectos múltiples de DAPA
y la expandida DACA. Esto
es solamente unas semanas

4 Power Questions that will grow your
Leadership Tree

Most agree that there are
many traits of a true leader,
including: highly
competent, professional, visionary,
trustworthy, instill confidence,
good communicator and,
of course, courageous.
But great leaders have three other
qualities that further set them
apart.
In the 21st century marketplace,
the prime devotion of leaders
is to their people because
they know it’s through engaged,
high-functioning teams that their
“bottom line” goals are achieved.
If you can deliver on this trait,
you’ll be more likely to accomplish
your professional and personal
goals.
The most successful and beloved
leaders I’ve known had another
trait that’s sometimes overlooked:
They mentored their people to become
leaders.
Great NFL coaches like Vince
Lombardi, Bill Walsh, Tom Landry
and Bill Parcels became legendary
through the subsequent
performance of the coaches they
mentored. It’s called the Coaching
Tree. Whose names will be on your
Leadership Tree?
This quality has two parts that are
as inextricable as the sides of a
coin: 1) They’re devoted to asking
questions; and 2) they listen.
Number 3 is so important that I
want to offer four cardinal questions
that will help you become a
legendary leader and build your
own Leadership Tree. The first two
are from my friend and Brain Trust
member, Chester Elton, co-author
of What Motivates Me. The last
two are mine.
How’re you doing?
Chester says this isn’t a drive-by
question. It’s a look ’em in the eye,
“I’ve got time to listen” question.
The setting has to be where the leader
can be “in the moment” with
the other person. And answers are
not pre-supposed – might be about
their job, their aspirations, or their
personal life. Great leaders care
about all of that.
How can I help?
Chester says this question creates
a safe environment. A mentor once
told me, “If you’re in trouble in
your job, don’t go down by yourself.
Get me involved early and let
me help you get out of trouble.”
What do you think?
I call this the Leader’s Power Question
and it produces two kinds of
fruit: 1) few things cultivate the
illusive engagement factor more
than when the boss asks the opinion
of an employee; 2) valuable information
almost always spouts.
What did we learn?
I call this the Leader’s Magic Question,
and it may be the four most important
words in management. Surely
redemption is the most human
behavior a leader can demonstrate.
And the most powerful mentoring
moment happens after a team member
makes a mistake taking initiative
and the leader says, “Okay, now
we know what happened,” then
redeems him with: “What did we
learn?” Powerful!

One hundred and three (103)
years ago, thousands of
women gathered in Washington,
D.C. to call for a constitutional

women the right to vote. While
women had been fighting hard for
suffrage for over 60 years, this
marked the first major national
event for the movement.
The huge parade, which was
spearheaded by Alice Paul and
the National American Woman
Suffrage Association, was held
on March 3, 1913. Riding atop
a white horse, lawyer and activist
Inez Milholland led over five
thousand suffragettes up Pennsylvania
Avenue, along with over
20 parade floats, nine bands, and
four mounted brigades.
The organizers of the parade also
maximized attention on the event
by strategically hosting it just one
day before the inauguration of
President-elect Woodrow Wilson.
This tactic worked. As the women
marched from the U.S. Capitol
toward the Treasury Building,
they were met by thousands of
spectators, many in town for the
inauguration.

Some marchers were jostled, tripped,

police on the parade route did little

hearings. Historians later credited
the 1913 parade for giving
the suffrage movement a new
wave of inspiration and purpose.
While it took another seven years
for the Nineteenth Amendment to
be ratified on August 18, 1920,
the women who marched on that
day in history accomplished their
goal of reinvigorating the suffrage
movement. As the official parade
pamphlet read, they gave “expression
to the nation-wide demand
for an amendment to the United
States Constitution enfranchising
women.”

a Cuba, la Casa Blanca ha querido
lanzar un mensaje claro a los

“Los cubanos tienen que cambiar
Cuba”, afirmó.
Rhodes es uno de los arquitectos

El aeropuerto de Congonhas, en
la zona sur de São Paulo, se transformó
también en un campo de
batalla tras confirmarse que el ex
presidente declararía en las dependencias
de la Policía Federal,
dentro de la terminal. Los contrarios
al Partido de los Trabajadores
(PT) eran mayoría y celebraban la
toma de declaración de Lula como
si fuera una final de fútbol, con
gritos como “Eh, PT, vete a tomar
por culo”, “Fuera comunismo” y
“Nuestra bandera nunca será roja”,
en referencia al color de la enseña
del PT. El grupo de los defensores
del ex presidente veía la operación
policial como un “golpe”. “Es una
detención política”, afirmó uno de
ellos. Con el paso del tiempo los
ánimos se incendiaron y el alboroto
obligó a la Policía Militar, una
vez más, a intervenir. Los agentes
tuvieron que montar un cordón policial
para evitar una guerra entre
las dos hinchadas.

ONU urge a Honduras a proteger al
activista mexicano Gustavo Castro
GINEBRA, SUIZA - El relator de
la ONU sobre la situación de los
defensores de los derechos humanos,
Michel Frost, urgió hoy al
Gobierno de Honduras a que garantice
la seguridad del activista
mexicano Gustavo Castro Soto,
herido durante el asesinato de la
hondureña Berta Cáceres.
“Exhorto a las autoridades hondureñas
a garantizar que la vida de
Castro Soto no corra más riesgos
en el país y que le permitan regresar
a México lo más pronto posible”,
dijo el relator en un comunicado.
Actualmente, Castro Soto está
impedido de abandonar Honduras
hacia México, su país de origen,
debido a una decisión judicial que
no le permite abandonar el país en
treinta días.
El pasado 7 de marzo, Castro Soto
fue interceptado por autoridades
de Honduras en el aeropuerto de
Tegucigalpa, cuando pretendía
abordar el avión con destino a
México después de presenciar el
asesinato de la activista hondureña
Cáceres.
En ese momento, el activista iba
acompañado de Dolores Jiménez
Hernández, embajadora de México
en Honduras, y del cónsul
Pedro Barragán, quienes tuvieron
que forcejear con las autoridades
hondureñas en el aeropuerto para
salvaguardar a su compatriota y
dirigirse a la embajada.
Las autoridades hondureñas han
insistido en que Castro se encuentra
bajo calidad de testigo protegido,
y que su declaración es fundamental
para la investigación.
La activista Berta Cáceres fue asesinada
el pasado 3 de marzo en su
domicilio en la ciudad de La Esperanza,
en el oeste de Honduras,
por un número todavía indeterminado
de hombres que le dispararon
y huyeron, y que antes hirieron a
Castro Soto que se encontraba con
ella.

En 40 días definirían la extradición
del ‘Chapo’ hacia EU
CIUDAD DE MÉXICO.- Luego
de que en uno de los juicios de extradición
que enfrenta el narcotraficante
Joaquín “Chapo” Guzmán se
cerrara el periodo para el desahogo
de pruebas, recientemente inició el
plazo de 20 días hábiles para que
una juez federal emita una opinión
jurídica sobre la solicitud más reciente
formulada por el Gobierno
de Estados Unidos.

defensa del capo el pasado martes
en el proceso de extradición
8/2015, dijo el abogado de Guzmán

Por el momento hay que esperar a
que la juez resuelva en “conciencia
y a profundidad” si la petición
del Gobierno de Estados Unidos
cumple o no con los requisitos mínimos
que marca la Ley de Extradición
Internacional.
La resolución de la juzgadora federal
es sólo un paso más en el
procedimiento que prevé la ley,
explicó Castillo, y advirtió que, de
acuerdo a su experiencia como litigante,
la extradición de Guzmán
Loera podría demorar de uno a tres
años, dependiendo de que la defensa
agote los recursos legales para
evitar que “El Chapo” sea enviado
a Estados Unidos.
Aunque se prevé que esto último
no suceda, ya que el 2 de marzo de
este año, uno de los abogados del
capo, José Refugio Rodríguez, dio
a conocer que Guzmán Loera pidió
acelerar el proceso de su extradición.
La dependencia ha adelantado su
postura a favor de extraditar al que
fue considerado por las autoridades
como el líder del “cártel de Sinaloa”.
