Wealden Times talks to Claire Overton...
Do you have a
beauty regime?
As a mum and a dog walker,
my time is limited so I tend
to use a facial cleanser in
the shower. A quick rinse, a
nose full of beautiful scents
and I’m done. I love Neals
Yard White Tea Facial Toner
at the moment. It contains
flower essences to balance
emotions and keeps me sane
on the school run. I love
making green smoothies
too. I always start with kale,
spinach or avocado, then the
fruit, nuts and chia seeds.
My secret ingredient is a
tablespoon of coconut oil.
Do you have a particular
product you cannot
live without?
I never leave the house
without lipbalm. It feels so
wrong! NYR Shea Nut and
Rosehip organic lip formula is
a must-have. In winter I can’t
go anywhere without hand
cream either. I love the NYR
Bee Lovely hand cream; made
with a honey blend from small
scale farmers in Nicaragua
and Mexico and it’s organic
and fair trade. Happy farmers,
happy bees, happy hands.
What’s your ultimate
pampering treat?
Oh, definitely a hot bath
with Epsom bath salts
and bath oils, candles and
aromatherapy burner going. I
try and do dry skin brushing
beforehand. I brush towards
the heart for the circulation
and lymphatic system. I
then hop in and wallow for
a long as humanly possible
letting the salts, seaweed
and arnica do their thing.
Who’s your style icon?
I don’t think I have a style
icon. There are a few things I
need from my clothes: to feel
vaguely cool for a 38 year old
mum and to feel comfortable.
I’m quite busty so I also need
a decent fitting bra! I love
pretty dresses with leggings
and I’ll dress that up or down
depending on the situation
and weather. I try to be myself
and not follow trends, so if I
see something I really like that
suits me and makes me feel
good, I’ll have it, I like my
style to reflect me. So while I
like my Jimmy Choo glasses,
I don’t love them quite as
much as my Boden onesie!
Sprouting shoots...
Sprouts are a super cheap and
convenient source of complete
nourishment. They’re in the
transitional stage between
seed and plant, making them
quite literally a live food, and
there’s an incredible increase
in nutrient and protein levels
during this process. Pretty
much all edible grains, seeds
and legumes can be sprouted,
and can be easily munched
on in a stir fry or served
raw in salads. The process
is simple. Take some mung
beans, for example (a Chinese
favourite) and wash them
thoroughly. It’s best to use
organic beans so they haven’t
been chemically treated. Soak
them overnight in a jar of
pure, clean water and cover the
top with cheese cloth. Ensure
there is enough room for
the sprouts to expand. Rinse
them a couple of times each
day for a couple of days, and
keep them in a place with a
consistent room temperature.
Once the little shoots
have made an appearance,
they’re ready to enjoy!
Sugar & spice...
If you’re after a summer
fragrance, then the new
Nashi Blossom cologne
from Jo Malone, available
this month, will be your
go-to scent. A spritz of
this crisp and ultra vibrant
essence will brighten your
day and lighten your spirits.
At first, you’ll enjoy a wave
of white blossom, which
then develops into sweet
pear and apple. After a
time, the deeper rose and
soft white musk appear.
For evening, try the Black
Cedarwood and Juniper
for a darker, more woody
experience. With touches
of cumin and chilli leaves,
this perfume takes us to
the forest floor with its
earthy, seductive aura,
and pairs beautifully with
citrus scents like Lime Basil
and Mandarin. Available
this summer, they start
at £42 for 30ml and
can be purchased from
www.jomalone.com or your
nearest Jo Malone stockist.
