A new house –
on your doorstep
Building an extension can be a great way to get more from your home, without the
hassle of moving. But, what kind of extension do you go for? Traditional, seamless, or
radical and modern? The possibilities, as they say, are (almost) limitless...
Simon Palmer
Director, A T Palmer Ltd Restoration
Specialists - Established 1949
Many of the renovation projects that A T Palmer Ltd
undertakes include extensions to expand on the living
accommodation within period properties.
Extensions should protect the character and appearance
of the building and be designed in a high quality manner
using appropriate materials.
Most buildings can be extended sensitively. The majority
of extensions that we build are traditional and in keeping
with the style of the existing home using authentic materials
to maintain the character and charm of the period property.
These extensions will often house bespoke handmade
kitchens or high tech home entertainment and multimedia
areas. We always strive to seamlessly blend the new
structure in with the existing, using locally sourced new and
reclaimed materials to match as closely as possible.
We often work on listed properties, which require
traditional craftsmen, skills and extra attention to detail to
satisfy the stringent planning requirements.
For example, this listed 18th-century farmhouse, right,
near Lamberhurst, underwent a complete renovation as well
as having a relatively ‘modern’ extension – though one that
is in-keeping with the look and era of the main house.
A T Palmer Ltd employs a highly skilled workforce
covering all trades. We work in close partnership with the
client, architect, structural engineer and designer throughout
each stage of the project from initial consultation through
to completion.
Above: In this Edwin Lutyens early 20th century style house, we built a double-height
vaulted ceiling extension to the front of the property to create a new drawing room with
a new entrance porch and lobby area to the right hand side. All materials were carefully
sourced to match the existing structure.
Above: This listed 18th century farmhouse underwent a complete renovation with the
addition of an oak-framed, tile hung with peg tile roof extension to the side of the house.
This housed a bespoke handmade kitchen and galleried master bathroom suite.
