Cutting to
the finish...
What finish you choose for your home, whether it
be paint, wallpaper or something more decorative,
depends on many different factors...
What makes people choose paint over other finishes?
One of the main reasons to choose paint is costing. Emulsion
finished walls for example are far cheaper than wallpaper or
tiling. They are interchangeable, damaged areas of paint can
be repaired, not the case for wallpaper. Tiling is a longer-term
commitment, wall tiling is more popular and practical in wet
areas. We would recommend upgrading your emulsion finish
to Crown Extreme Clean. This is an emulsion that can be
scrubbed clean and has a harder finish than standard trade
emulsion finishes.
Are there different finishes recommended for old
and new properties?
There are many different finishes with regard to walls;
for new walls you would use a standard contract emulsion
that will sink into the new plaster.
When emulsioning old walls and older properties, a
vinyl emulsion is more effective as it contains vinyl / plastic
which makes it more flexible, so less prone to minor cracking.
More examples, too many to mention, include lime wash for
old buildings with solid walls ie churches, casein distemper
for old buildings etc, etc.
What are the most challenging kinds of jobs?
The most challenging project in terms of labour is badly decayed
paintwork on timber exteriors. The removal of loose paint, and
application of spot prime undercoat and gloss are the minimal
requirements. We would recommend an additional undercoat or
gloss depending on the colour being used. Full redecoration to
churches can be challenging with not many occurring these days.
However, we have recently quoted for a full church interior and
External paints need to stand up to the
elements as well as looking tip-top (Mister
have previously completed a number. National Trust properties
can present a challenge. The last couple of years they’ve been
specifying Sikkens Cetol Xd Gloss system on all their exterior
redecorations. So, a good product for your readers to use.
