compounds, and yet we are ever identifying ourselves<br />

with them. That is the great mistake that the distinc<br />

tion has been lost. When this power of discrimina<br />

tion has been attained, man sees that everything in<br />

this world, mental and physical, is a compound, and,<br />

as such, cannot be the Purusa.<br />

54. The saving knowledge<br />

is that knowledge of dis<br />

crimination which covers all objects, all means.<br />

Isolation, that is the goal; when that is attained,<br />

the soul will find that it was alone all the time, and it<br />

required no one to make it happy. As long as we<br />

require someone else to make us happy we are slaves.<br />

When the Purusa finds that It is free, and does not<br />

require anything to complete Itself, that this nature is<br />

quite unnecessary, then freedom is attained. Then<br />

comes this Kaivalya.<br />

55. By the similarity of purity between the Sattvaand<br />

the Purusa comes Kaivalya.<br />

When the soul realises that it depends on nothing in<br />

the universe, from gods to the lowest atom, that is<br />

called Kaivalya (isolation) and perfection. It is<br />

attained when this mixture of purity and impurity<br />

called mind has been made as pure as the PuruSa<br />

Itself; then the Sattva, the mind, reflects only the un<br />

qualified essence of purity, which is the Puruia*
