Who takes care of people helping people?
Steen Visholm, Professor at the Danish University in Roskilde, specializes in group psychology
and organizational psychology. In addition to his role as professor, he is a member of the
international organizations ISPSO and OPUS. He has written several books and articles on
organizational psychology.
Steen will be preparing a study gathering all previous research on mental health in the EMS
business in order to find out how to organize and manage to obtain both good mental health
and performance of tasks. Steen will be presenting a pre-conference workshop at Herlev
Hospital on Sunday 29th May and a shorter workshop at EMS2016 on Wednesday 1st June.
Frederik Madsen, Falck’s VP Group Human Relations and Corporate Culture, will appear as a
consultant at the earlier event.
When interviewed about his work, a
paramedic in Falck once said: “A rescuer acts
upon his instincts, trusting that he is making
the right decision in a split second. The
reflection and contemplation happens later.
It happens at night when we get back home,
perhaps even after a few days when we look
back. Different thoughts run through our
head: ‘Could I have done anything differently?
Did I do enough?’”
Behind a profession of meticulous work
helping others lies a spectrum of emotions.
EMS front-liners are exposed to incidents
that can be psychologically challenging,
and some rescue officers can experience
negative long-term effects physically and
mentally. They take care of patients, victims,
relatives and sometimes even bystanders.
But who takes care of them?
A review of ten recent studies reveals
that about 20% of paramedics and 17%
of firefighters are at risk of developing
accumulated stress and PTSD (Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder) where the
prevalence in the normal population is 2-3%.

During the EMS 2016 Conference in
Copenhagen, Falck wants to deal with
managing front-liners in pre-hospital
organisations, especially focusing on how to
ensure the right managerial competencies
for handling emotional and psychological
health. The results of a pilot study that
covers both public and private providers
in the Copenhagen area will be presented
by Steen Visholm, Professor MSO at
Roskilde University. Additionally, at the
Copenhagen Academy for Medical Education
and Simulation participants will have the
opportunity to discuss and reflect upon
emotions and reflections within emergency
services. This will take place during a precourse
on Sunday 29 May.
The target group for these events are
researchers, managers and front liners within
the EMS business interested in learning
more about working with psychological and
emotional health and influencing future steps
in broadening knowledge and processes
within this area.
“We want to gather interested parties from
around the world to discuss setting up a
society dedicated to developing knowledge
about how to manage and organise EMS
organisations, specifically in connection with
emotional and psychological health, and we
hope to see many interested participants,”
says Frederik Madsen, Vice President of
Group Human Relations at Falck. The project
is sponsored by the Lundbeck Foundation.
