This diagram depicts the frequency and type of side effects experienced by patients using Penthrox. Penthrox is new to the UK however it has been used in Australasia for over 30 years. It has been used extensively in the prehospital setting and is used by the Australian <strong>Ambulance</strong> Services, Australian Defence Forces, first-aid officers, ski fields, mines and more. In Australia it is more commonly known as the ‘green whistle’ due to its characteristic green colour and shape. It is a lightweight, hand-held inhaler which is selfadministered by the patient. The safety and efficacy of Penthrox has also been assessed in a randomised, multi-centre, double-blinded, placebocontrolled study conducted in the UK. 3 This study was conducted across six sites in the UK and included 300 trauma patients in the Emergency Department (ED). It demonstrated the effectiveness and safety of Penthrox for the treatment of acute pain. A total of 303 patients were screened for the study; 149 patients received inhaled methoxyflurane and 149 patients received placebo. Patients were able to request rescue analgesia, if required. The primary endpoint was the change in pain intensity as measured using a visual analogue scale [VAS] from baseline to 5, 10, 15 and 20 minutes after the start of study drug inhalation.
