South Central Ambulance
Service NHS Foundation
Trust (SCAS) are pleased to
have launched a trial with
Auxilium. This system aims
to assist us in identifying and
treating patients at the site
of an incident, specifically
for the patients who are
incapacitated and unable to
communicate this information
fully themselves. It allows
ambulance staff to find out
valuable information about a
patient even before they even
reach the scene of an incident.
The Auxilium
system allows any
individual to store
their personal
information
on a website.
Information such
as name, home address, next of kin
and key medical record data which
could potentially be very useful in
some situations when the patient is
unable to communicate.
Each Auxilium user is provided with
their own unique Auxilium Number,
this number can be displayed on
items carried by the user, such as
Staff ID Cards, keyrings, or even
displayed on their mobile phone.
There is a distinctive Auxilium
System logo attached to the 10-digit
Auxilium number. This logo can be
easily spotted by the emergency
services and the public. The number
can then be provided to the
emergency call taker by the caller
who will have access to the Auxilium
Database. The operator with then
use this number to access the
relevant information.
Luci Stephens, Director of
Operations – Clinical Coordination
Centres, South Central Ambulance
Service NHS Foundation Trust, said
“We are pleased to have embarked
on this trial of Auxilium which we
hope will prove to be of benefit
to patients and staff alike. There
Auxilium and South Central Ambulance Service launch a new trial
are occasions when it would be
incredibly useful to have key details
about a patient which they might not
be able to provide to us due to their
medical condition and we hope that
this trial will help demonstrate how
important these details are in the
event of an emergency”.
Grant Moreton, Inventor and
Director of Auxilium Systems Ltd
said “Some years ago I was witness
to a serious incident and it at that
time it occurred to me that there
was a benefit of a system which
would provide peoples contact
details in the event of an emergency.
The Auxilium system has been
initially made available to members
of the public in the SCAS area (as
this is where the trial is taking place)
to enable them to log on and fill out
the details that they would want the
ambulance service to have access
to. Such things as contact details,
current medications etc can be
filled out so that staff in our control
room could have access to them to
pass on to responding ambulance
St John New Zealand reaches ePRF milestone
St John New Zealand has
successfully completed the
implementation of its new
electronic Patient Report Form
(ePRF) across its emergency
ambulance service. The worldleading
technology replaces
paper patient records and was
successfully implemented over
a six month timeframe.
ePRF was
developed
by St John in
partnership
with the
Ministry
crews. I am delighted
that we have now
embarked on this
with SCAS to assess
its effectiveness”.
Auxilium is already
up and running so
if members of the public would like
to know more they can email info@
auxsys.uk membership is currently
free to all schools for the first year
with a £1 fee per person per year
for all other members of the public.
Auxilium are also offering certain
charities whose members have
medical conditions over 500,000
Prof. Douglas Chamberlain ‘father of the paramedic profession’
takes centre stage at EHAAT’s Clinical Governance Day
The founder of the first
paramedic unit in Europe,
Prof. Douglas Chamberlain,
spoke to an 85-strong
audience of doctors,
paramedics, nurses, students
and other emergency services
personnel at the Essex &
Herts Air Ambulance Trust’s
monthly Clinical Governance
Day held at North Weald
Airfield on Tuesday 15 March.
Prof. Chamberlain, who has
dedicated his career to pioneering
the resuscitation techniques that are
now common place amongst the
emergency services and save lives
every day, was invited to speak at
the event hosted at North Weald
Airfield - home of the Herts Air
Ambulance.
After giving his presentation about
optimising Cardio-Pulmonary
of Health’s Information Group,
supported by the Accident
Compensation Corporation (ACC),
Valentia Technologies and Samsung
Electronics.
ePRF will soon allow the secure
transmission of patient information
between ambulances and hospital
emergency departments, aligning
St John records with other health
records using the patient’s NHI
(national health index) number.
From 2017, ePRF will enable hospital
staff to access ambulance care
summary records directly using their
computers.
Resuscitation he remarked: “It was
a real privilege to have come and
met so many wonderful dedicated
people, thank you so very much, an
inspiring day for us”.
EHAAT opens its doors to the
wider healthcare and emergency
services community on the third
Tuesday of each month. All those
with an interest in pre-hospital
critical care are invited to share its
The new technology gives
paramedics access to better patient
information. Currently, only details
of previous ambulance call-outs can
be searched, but with the future
linkage of other health records, St
John will be able to provide higher
quality information to emergency
department staff, and others in
the heath sector, improving clinical
practice and patient care.
St John Director of Clinical
Operations, Norma Lane says the
roll out of ePRF is a key milestone
in the modernisation of St John’s
ambulance service. “Moving from
governance meetings. Every event
is themed around an element of
emergency care and, as well as case
presentations, audits and journal
reviews, include presentations from
expert speakers from a variety of
clinical backgrounds.
Laurie Phillipson, EHAAT Clinical
Manager said: “Every paramedic
across the country has heard of Prof.
Chamberlain; in many ways he is the
father of the paramedic profession
and responsible for saving thousands
of lives; to have him speak at one
of our governance days was a real
honour”.
Other speakers on the day included
David and Kaz Fletcher, who spoke of
the influence that data downloaded
from defibrillators can have on
improving resuscitation, and Dr Ben
Singer who presented forwardthinking
presentation on Extra-
pen and paper to
electronic records
enables us to share
higher quality
patient information
with District Health Boards (DHBs),
improving patient care. We can
also now electronically analyse and
audit patient records, extracting
anonymised information that informs
the ongoing improvement of our
clinical education and practice.”
Dr Alex Rosenberg , Consultant in
and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust,
and some of his colleagues attended
the Governance Day. He said: “We
all thought it was a really great day
and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think the
real take home message for me was
the chaos that your team deal with
day to day and how this impacts
upon resuscitation.”
