CANDLEWOOD
SUITES FIRST U.S. HOTEL
BUILT WITH 100% CROSS-LAMINATED TIMBER
An 11-person crew needed just 10 weeks to erect the all-wood
structure that is the new Candlewood Suites on Redstone
Arsenal, Huntsville, Ala. It is the nation’s fi rst all-CLT (crosslaminated
timber) hotel, and utilized 1,200 CLT wall panels and
200,000 CLT fasteners. By using CLT over traditional methods,
the Building Team saved 35-40% in worker-hours and reduced
the crew by 40%. Made of several layers of pressed lumber
board stacked in alternating directions, CLT offers increased
strength, durability, and sustainability and conservation benefi ts
over plywood. Leidos was the architect for the 62,688-sf
structure. The 92-key hotel was built in partnership with the U.S.
Army, IHG Army Hotels, and Lendlease, which served as the
owner, developer, design-builder, and asset manager.

SPACES, OUTDOOR AREAS CREATE
THE ‘UN-BANK’ BANK HEADQUARTERS
The new $26 million Lake Trust Credit Union headquarters, in
Brighton, Mich., is airy and inviting, unlike most banks. The
100,000-sf building is designed to accommodate up to 325
employees and offers a 100% open work environment. The
three levels are connected with a grand stair and a large atrium
that can double as an auditorium. The building targets LEED
certifi cation with the use of low-e glass and refurbished wood
paneling from demolished Detroit buildings. A porch, balcony,
and outdoor dining area overlook the site’s wetlands, woodlands,
and rolling topography. SmithGroupJJR provided programming,
architecture, interior design, and all engineering services.
The Christman Company handled development, program
management, and construction management services.
