Mario tackled the mighty Indian Ocean and its beaches by attaching a float to his bag and swam with the rope attached. A treacherous two week trek across 15 lagoons for 300 km brought him to East London. Jafta came to Mario’s rescue. Jafta says, “I was driving from the airport when I saw this man walking. He appeared tired and injured. I stopped my car and after hearing his story, took him to my house.” Mario recuperated with Jafta for a few days, whilst speaking at a prestigious lunch on “Overcoming Fear.” Little did Mario know what was ahead of him on the Wild Coast. Mthatha Town would present him the greatest fear to date: that his life could be threatened by people. “I’m in a small town called Mthana and the people here are not welcoming of strangers,” he writes. His introduction was to see a dead body on the roadside and be told by a local, “They will rob you then kill you and leave your body on the street.” Someone who knew Mario and the area messaged him: “Just respect the people and their fears. Be cautious and know who to contact in case of emergency. Xenophobia is mostly aimed at people taking jobs from locals and encroaching on their turf. Generally people are not hostile.” Mario trekked through the Wild Coast’s forest hills to Port St. John before Durban on paths that the local Xhosa people would take. “Some days are nine hour hikes through forest, jungle, and mountains. Been taking bigger risks, climbing major cliffs, crossing forests in hopes that animal/human treks lead me to the right place.” Mario saw many homes of rural South Africa in Bulungula, Eastern Cape, where people of the villages With phone and camera ruined on a tough river crossing, an eco-lodge “done right” was the oasis Mario needed at Mtentu Lodge and Camp, en route to Durban via the coast. Every day this super-human older man climbed these steep hills to sell his eggs and chickens. He also had children and grandchildren to take care of. In Durban, with new friends, what seemed like a crazy idea arose—to longboard 80 km in two days.
