shape up Keeping your hair healthy in the sun By Brigitte Wildt, Stylist, Tangled Hair Salon Just as the sun damages your skin, it can damage your hair too. If you are spending a lot of time outdoors, use a hair care product that contains UV filters. It could be a gel, cream or spray-in that will protect your hair from sun damage, and keep your color-treated hair from fading. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat will keep your hair from being scorched, and it will also protect your scalp and ears from sunburn. Never shampoo your hair before swimming because it strips away your natural oils and makes your hair vulnerable to chlorine and salt. Saturate your hair with clean water or leave in conditioner and it won’t absorb as much chlorine or salt. Make sure to rinse your hair after your day on the beach or pool, or better still, several times during. You will probably wash your hair more frequently whilst in a hot climate to deal with sweat, so use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Shampoo your scalp only, letting the suds run down the lengths of your hair, cleansing it gently without drying it out. If you use hair styling products, use a clarifying shampoo once a week to clear away the product build up, then follow with a deep conditioning treatment. Fight frizz by keeping your hair healthy and well maintained with regular deep conditioning treatments and trims. Anti-frizz serum helps to smooth the hair and add shine, but don’t use too much if you have very fine hair because it can weigh it down. And finally, style without stress. Don’t waste your time fighting the frizz on high humidity days—the frizz will win. Instead just have a side braid, a loose up-do or a slick ponytail. For true beachy styled hair, buy a salt spray or make one yourself: Dissolve 1 tablespoon sea salt in 8 ounces of warm water, add 10 drops of lavender oil, shake well and spritz onto wet or dry hair. Add waves overnight by wrapping your damp, salt-sprayed hair into a sock bun above your head or wrap your hair around multiple socks, then tie the sock ends. There are great examples on the Internet of both versions. In the morning remove the sock bun or multi-socks and tousle your strands. Socks are more comfy than rollers and give you loose beachy waves. The launch was intended to make the charity’s presence known and encourage corporate sponsorship. With endless hors-d’oeuvres provided by The Palms and champagne donated by The Wine Cellar, a wonderful time was had by all. Food for Thought was founded by Jeanne and Karen Savory to provide free breakfast to all children in the government schools. The first phase, due to begin in September, will provide a healthy breakfast on every school day to the government primary schools in North, Middle and South Caicos and Salt Cay.
