Heywood in Bloom Update We now have the date for the RHS judging for Heywood and it is Thursday 14th July. We have just celebrated our towns 1940’s day with a fabulous display of aeroplanes and army vehicles on show. The town was packed and entertainment was ongoing throughout the day. Heywood in Bloom had its tombola stall on the front street which helps to raise money towards funding our flower displays. The weather was perfect for the day and the town was buzzing with people really getting into the mood and enjoying the fun. The month of June is a very busy month and has seen lots of planting going on all around the town. New raised planting has taken place at The Brick House and new flower beds have been created throughout the town. The hanging baskets have been put up and extra brackets are going up on new businesses who have joined us this year. Crown Oil Ltd at Heap Bridge have joined our route this year along with the Crown Public house who have now purchased one of our banners and put up hanging baskets. The memorial gardens in the centre
of town have now seen the dedication of four new wrought iron poppy benches. The dedication was held on Saturday 18th June to commemorate the Battle of the Somme and followed by a parade through town. Two of the new poppy benches were purchased with funding from the Heywood Rotary Group. The roundabout at junction 19 has now had two giant plant pots put in place and planted up with colourful flowers. The plant pots have been purchased by the Heywood Rotary Club who have worked tirelessly within our town to raise the funding. We have also been putting lots of hours into getting our allotment ready and planted up. Volunteers have dug over all the plots (which had grown some huge weeds) and planted lots of vegetables. The greenhouses are well stocked with tomato and cucumber plants which already have some well grown cucumbers on them. The fruit trees are now enjoying the extra light and space after the park rangers cut back the overgrown area behind them. We would like to say a big thank you to Bob, Tommy & Steve who worked hard all day to chop down a jungle of brambles and selfseeded bushes and trees. We also want to say thank you to Heywood Scaffolding who kindly donated a dozen planks so we can build raised beds for the local primary school to use. They even delivered them free of charge! We have recently had some new helpers come forward to work in the allotment Steven and Colin. We still have room in the allotment for volunteers to come and spend some time call into our headquarters at TOPS (The Old Police Station) on Hind Hill St if you are interested.
