The process was comprised of an initial telephone interview followed by an assessment day at the EDFT London Headquarters. While the former predominantly tested competencies, the latter largely tested a broad range of topics including prior experience, knowledge and interpersonal skills. Overall, the day was enjoyable as it also gave me the chance to meet other prospective interns. “Responsibility was given to me right from the outset.” How much responsibility were you given? Responsibility was given to me right from the outset. I was based in the Treasury department. On day one I was given daily reports to update and issue both internally and externally. This exposure from the beginning helped to fast track my understanding of the department. Each intern is given a project to complete that is presented to Senior Executives. What has been your biggest challenge? I found that the biggest challenge of the process was honing my skills to make sure I was ready for the presentation in the final week! I learnt that a calm but confident attitude coupled with a strong level of knowledge about the content was key to presenting well. Once it was finished I had a great sense of achievement. What did you most enjoy about your role? The flexibility of when I conducted the work for my project was one of the parts I most enjoyed. I was able to dictate my own pace and progress, albeit working towards project completion goals. This added to the responsibility and gave me a feeling of independence. Moreover, the team I worked in provided a great level of support. What was the atmosphere like in your team? The team I worked in were enthusiastic, hard-working and had plenty of knowledge to share. I felt settled within my first week of joining as the team were also welcoming. The team had a diverse age range, depth of experience and a wide array of interests outside of work.
