About
I studied Modern Languages at Cambridge.
Being at Fidelity helped develop my
passion for understanding how companies
tick, including three years as an assistant
portfolio manager on a European diversified
portfolio. 10 years on and I’ve followed
companies in all kinds of sectors. I’m now a
Director of Research.
Why your industry?
The variety. It sounds clichéd but
genuinely no two days are the same.
You can wake up in the morning with a
plan, but if one of the companies you
are looking at has a profit warning, or
perhaps they make an acquisition, then
all bets are off.
“Do your homework, and read
the Financial Times for at least
10 minutes each day. Each sector
has specific terminology and the
FT will help you pick all this up.”
What is your top tip for working in
your industry?
Read, read and read. Then read some
more! There are lots of helpful investment
books out there, but the Financial Times
is a good place to start. It helps you
get used to the jargon that is used day
in, day out, and it eventually becomes
second nature to you.
Which personality traits or skills aid
success in Investment Management?
Flexibility and adaptability are key
attributes which contribute to being
successful in investment management.
It’s also very important that you have
an inquisitive mind. Asking intelligent
questions holds the key to any investment
decision, and therefore plays a large role
in your success.
What advice would you share to others
considering a career in Investment
Management?
Do your homework, and read the
Financial Times for at least 10 minutes
each day. Each sector has specific
terminology and the FT will help you pick
all this up.
