Too Fast, Too Furious By Amanda Bradley It’s that time of year again - Time Trial and Autocross are back. The Mavs met on September 10th and 11th in Mineral Wells to kick off the second half of the season. It started with a bang – literally! There was even a track puppy, Femke, and a track bird, Birdy, or “Chicken” as we called it. It was my second time to attend a Time Trial. I felt a lot more confident this time – especially in driving a stick. I started out with a slower time, but quickly knocked off eight seconds or more with the help of Ray Kelly, our Region’s number one male driver, instructing me. The track was slightly different than last time, just enough to make it more interesting. And the best part, my dad, Richard Bradley, was participating as well. My inner-competitive nature came out, but he still beat me, just barely! It is so nice to be able to share such a fun weekend experience with my dad. It was a little difficult having to share the Boxster all day, (all the more reason to get my own, right?), but it got especially hard when my last run came around. I was finally going to drive on my own. My dad had just finished his last run of the day and had spun out several times (way to go daddy-o!). As I pulled up to the starting line, everyone came running towards me telling me not to go anywhere. My back tire was corded. I tried to look on the bright side by telling myself I drove so fast I burnt through my tires. The same day, Robyn Howard drove so fast she cracked her top driver numbers. Deane Yamada drove so fast in his beautiful Chevy Corvette that he broke his front rotor. To follow that, Michael Pelletier over heated and had to be pushed back to the tarmac. That evening we went to dinner at the Mesquite Pit with Tannia Dobbins, Jeff Herrmann, Travis and Robyn Howard, Al and Pat Silva, and Joel Nannis. We enjoyed drinks, barbeque, fried food – even fried bacon! It was a nice time. The next morning started off bright and early again. Tannia Dobbins was nice enough to let me drive her Spec Boxster in the Autocross since my tire was still ruined. It was a little bit of a change having to shift with a lightweight flywheel. Who knew such a little change could make such a big difference? However, I still was able to get my times down and had my fastest time, a 105, in the afternoon run. It may not have been a great time in comparison to others, but it was enough to please me. I’m sure I could have done better in my own car, but there is always next time. At the end of the day, Ray Nannis, corded his tires as well. I guess we were all driving too fast and too furious, but hey, sometimes you got to drive it like you stole it. It is more fun that way. The Autocross event had a lot more drivers than the Time Trial, as well as several attendees driving Nissans, Mazdas, and Infinitis. It was nice to see other people enjoying the Maverick events as much as we do. At the end of the day, we all had a great time. The weather was not too bad, and although we were exhausted, it was well worth it and a great experience.
