Slipstream - October 2011

on Route 38. Windows down, A/C
off, no more Doobie Brothers, this
is sheer nirvana. And I’m in a 911
with Sport Cup tires. Geez Louise!
Red River is a cool little mountain
town and good for a double pit
stop. A nice local person spots
my car and laments: “You’re
not from around here, are you?”
No, but I would like to be.
More mountain roads. Slow moving
traffic ahead, so I pull over and give
them a 10-minute head start. I’ll
catch them in five, but no hurry here,
this is the good stuff and I’m loving
every minute of it. The Audi station
wagon I pass thinks about keeping
up, but soon becomes lapped traffic.
Oooh, getting a little nippy as clouds
move in, better put on that jacket.
Alas, the mountain roads east of
Eagles Nest eventually give way
to flatlands, but I have gotten my
fix, for now at least. All I have
left to look forward to is two
track-filled days in Denver…….
is this a great country or what?
High Plains is one hour east of
Denver, next to a pasture filled
with Buffalo. What a great 2.5
mile track! Lots of topo and
similar to Laguna Seca, including
the corkscrew blind drop.
There are at least ten Mavericks
here, including a Texas flag proudly
flying over the Spec Boxsters and
other race cars. Awwww….the
smell of Cup cars in the morning.
I’ve decided it’s not just the cars or
the people, it’s the Enchanted Circle
and High Plains Raceway!
