Introduction <strong>to</strong> the Geology of the<br />

Coachella Valley by Burt Boss<br />

On Thursday, <strong>Dec</strong>ember 15, <strong>from</strong> 4:<strong>30</strong> <strong>to</strong> 5:<strong>30</strong> p.m., the UCCE Master Gardeners will<br />

present a free class on the fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g and complex geology of the valley where we<br />

live and garden. The class, an “Introduction <strong>to</strong> the Geology of the Coachella Valley,”<br />

will be presented by Master Gardener Burt Boss at the Cathedral City Public Library.<br />

Burt’s love for his subject matter and his background as a knowledgeable docent and<br />

experienced hiker <strong>in</strong> the Coachella Valley sh<strong>in</strong>es through <strong>in</strong> this thoroughly enjoyable<br />

presentation. A flyer with more <strong>in</strong>formation is attached.<br />

The cooler days of the desert w<strong>in</strong>ter and early spr<strong>in</strong>g are a perfect time <strong>to</strong> explore the<br />

natural oases and other wonders of the Coachella Valley Preserve open 7 a.m. <strong>to</strong> 5<br />

p.m. through April, 2017 <strong>in</strong> Thousand <strong>Palm</strong>s. The Preserve is located on the northern<br />

side of the Coachella Valley, at the foot of the Indio Hills. With<strong>in</strong> the Preserve<br />

is a large, rare desert wetland and two palm woodland oases. You can experience<br />

first-hand some of the effects on the local ecology of the <strong>in</strong>famous San Andreas Fault<br />

which runs along the Coachella Valley. Water <strong>from</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>gs along the fault l<strong>in</strong>e feeds<br />

the ponds and creeks with<strong>in</strong> the Preserve and supports the native palms and other<br />

plant life <strong>in</strong> the oases. Knowledgeable docents give <strong>to</strong>urs of the oases and surround<strong>in</strong>g<br />

desert on a regular basis. Check the website “coachellavalleypreserve.org” for<br />

directions <strong>to</strong> the Preserve and <strong>in</strong>formation about the times and dates of the scheduled<br />

<strong>to</strong>urs. There is no charge <strong>to</strong> visit the Preserve; donations are always welcome though.<br />
