The banyan tree in the premises of the abandoned cashew
factory in Mattancherry looks onto the backwaters.
Underneath its canopy, a couple of musicians rehearse for an
upcoming show. The first floor of the warehouse is ready for a
film screening, and the rest for art and literature. The latest
offering from the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB) team, Uru is an art harbour
crafted by Riyas Komu, the co-founder of the bienniale. It was inaugurated on
November 12, 2016, in the hope of bridging the gap between the artist and the
local community, and is one of the many art-cafes that have sprung up in the last
five years, transforming Kochi into a cultural hub.
