Martin Hammer<br />

Professor of History of Art<br />

The art of Francis Bacon has<br />

been a major research focus<br />

for Professor Martin Hammer in<br />

recent years. His book Francis<br />

Bacon and Nazi Propaganda<br />

presents the artist as more<br />

engaged with the wider world<br />

than is usually acknowledged.<br />

He sought in his work to<br />

articulate what it felt like to<br />

witness the rise of Fascism<br />

in the 1930s, and then the<br />

horrifying violence and the<br />

self-destruction that ensued<br />

when the Nazi craving for power<br />

turned into the pursuit of military<br />

conquest and the Final Solution.<br />

Martin has served as a member<br />

of the Tate Britain Council, gave<br />

the Rothenstein lecture last year<br />

on Bacon and Degas, worked<br />

closely with Tate Research and<br />

Archive, and published his<br />

Bacon book with the museum.<br />

skills and provides experience<br />

relevant to a career in curating.<br />

Based at the School of Arts’<br />

Studio 3 Gallery, you are involved<br />

in all aspects of the running of the<br />

Gallery. You have the opportunity<br />

to work closely with partner<br />

organisations such as Canterbury<br />

museums and galleries.<br />

Compulsory modules provide<br />

an overview of the history of<br />

collecting and exhibitions through<br />

a series of case studies, taking<br />

advantage of our proximity to<br />

major London collections. We also<br />

cover theoretical issues relating<br />

to curating and museology.<br />

Collaborating with other students,<br />

you can develop your own project,<br />

working within the Gallery’s<br />

exhibition programme.<br />

It is possible to study this MA<br />

in three ways: either entirely in<br />

Canterbury, in both Canterbury<br />

and Paris, or entirely in Paris.<br />

This MA provides a structured<br />

introduction to the postgraduate<br />

study of the history and<br />

philosophy of art. Particular<br />

focuses include contemporary<br />

art, photography, Renaissance<br />

art, medieval art, 18th-century<br />

British painting, 19th-century<br />

French painting, modernism,<br />

aesthetics and the philosophy<br />

of art and film. You may elect<br />

to take a Philosophy of Art and<br />

Aesthetics pathway, which draws<br />

on the expertise of our Aesthetics<br />

Research Centre.<br />

If you are studying on the split-site<br />

programme, you spend your first<br />

term in Canterbury before<br />

relocating to our Paris School<br />

of Arts and Culture for the<br />

spring term, studying in the<br />

heart of historic Montparnasse.<br />

All teaching is provided in English,<br />

by University of Kent academics.<br />

Those on the year-long Paris<br />

programme take modules from<br />

their own subject area alongside<br />

optional modules inspired by Paris<br />

and its unique cultural history.<br />
