Centre for English
and World Languages
(CEWL)
CEWL offers English language
support before and during your
studies through a range of
modules and programmes in
English for Academic Purposes.
These are designed to give you
the best possible start to your
studies. They are provided by
a specialist team within the
University, allowing you to study
with our experienced EAP tutors
who fully understand the demands
of your postgraduate programme.
Pre-sessional courses
in English for Academic
Purposes (EAP)
These courses are for students
who need to improve their English
and study skills before joining
a postgraduate programme.
They range from five to 37 weeks,
depending on your current level
of English and the level you need
to reach in order to study on your
Pre-Master’s or degree course.
Course aims
Our pre-sessional courses
are accredited by the British
Association of Lecturers in
English for Academic Purposes
(BALEAP). These courses:
• introduce you to the UK
university learning style
and academic culture
• improve your grammar and
develop your vocabulary
• expand your critical thinking
skills
• develop your ability to read
academic texts, listen to
lectures, participate in
seminars and make
presentations.
In-sessional English Skills (IES)
Even if you have satisfied
the English language entry
requirements, you may still require
support during your studies. IES
helps you improve your English
language skills and gives you the
chance to discuss your specific
learning objectives.
You can attend a total of two hours
weekly in the autumn and spring
terms and receive guidance on
which components are most
useful to you. In addition, CEWL
works closely with a number of
academic schools across the
University in order to deliver creditbearing
and non-credit-bearing
modules in English for specific
academic purposes, such as
English for Law. Consult your
academic school for further details
of specific provision and eligibility
for enrolment.

Pre-Master’s Graduate
Diploma programme
If you wish to take a Master’s
programme at Kent Business
School but do not have the
required qualifications for direct
entry, Kent offers a Pre-Master’s
Graduate Diploma. This helps to
develop your English language
and subject-specific skills before
progressing to a range of Master’s
programmes at Kent Business
School.
Course structure
The Pre-Master’s Graduate
Diploma is a modular programme
taught over three terms, starting
in September. The structure is
uniquely designed to offer you
the opportunity to develop your
subject knowledge within your
chosen field while building your
language and academic skills.
In addition, you are able to select
from a range of optional modules.
Kent is a member of the University
Pathway Alliance (UPA), a
partnership of highly respected
pathways to UK degrees.
