Ciara Padden<br />

Lecturer in Learning Disabilities<br />

Ciara Padden’s research<br />

interests centre around the use<br />

of evidence-based practices<br />

and behaviour-analytic<br />

approaches to teach skills and<br />

improve quality of life for people<br />

with developmental disabilities.<br />

She is also interested in staff<br />

and family training, and the<br />

health and wellbeing of<br />

caregivers of people with<br />

developmental disabilities.<br />

She is a Board Certified<br />

Behaviour Analyst (BCBA)<br />

who has worked in the field of<br />

developmental disabilities for<br />

several years. She continues<br />

to provide staff training and<br />

consultancy in the areas of<br />

behaviour analysis and positive<br />

behaviour support. Her clinical<br />

expertise is integral to her<br />

teaching and research, with<br />

these three areas central<br />

features of her work.<br />

These degrees are advanced<br />

professional development<br />

programmes involving some or all<br />

of the following: distance learning;<br />

study workshops; service<br />

placement visits; and a clinical<br />

placement (which can be in your<br />

home area). The programmes in<br />

Intellectual and Developmental<br />

Disabilities (IDD) and Autism<br />

Studies can be completed<br />

mainly by distance learning.<br />

Accreditation of Prior Learning<br />

and Prior Experiential Learning<br />

may be possible on all<br />

programmes. You can transfer<br />

between programmes and<br />

between levels, subject to<br />

meeting admission requirements.<br />

Students taking the PDip or MSc<br />

in Analysis and Intervention in<br />

Intellectual and Developmental<br />

Disabilities need some practical<br />

experience in services for<br />

people with intellectual and<br />

developmental disabilities. They<br />

work in two different placements<br />

during the programme: a service<br />

placement based at the Tizard<br />

Centre and an individual clinical<br />

placement based in a community<br />

learning disability team or social<br />

care service. They base their<br />

dissertation on empirical research<br />

in services.<br />

The programme develops your<br />

critical understanding of concepts<br />

and principles of applied<br />

behaviour analysis. You<br />

gain a detailed knowledge<br />

of intellectual and developmental<br />

disabilities and experience of<br />

practice or conducting research<br />

in this field. The programme is<br />

for both recent graduates and<br />

experienced practitioners.<br />

Course content<br />

• Four modules in applied<br />

behaviour analysis including:<br />

Concepts of Applied Behaviour<br />

Analysis; Developing and<br />

Implementing Interventions;<br />

Observation and Analysis of<br />

Behaviour; Values, Ethics and<br />

Professional Practice.
