Mittens cracks open a canister. Mittens savors her teriyaki lamb treat. is accustomed to finding baited articles, so he will expect food scents in an article's scent profile. He may ignore articles that do not contain food. Film canisters limit the food scent without eliminating it, and finding them convinces the dog that food treats are associated with each article, even when food scent is not strong. Some trainers insert sealed jars of baby food meat or small cans of other gourmet foods into articles for the same purpose. Follow this sequence: 1. Article loaded with "free" bait. 2. Article loaded with "free" bait plus the baited canister. 3.Article plus baited canister. 4. Article, pure and simple. Dogs learn to crack open the canisters and remove thebaitfor themselves.I'm sure that they can smell the food in the canisters, but the food smell is not as noticeable as it would be ifloose food were folded into the article.I place baited canisterson TDX and VST tracks sometimes, and my dogs miss them often enough to convince me that the food smell associated with film canisters is not overwhelming.
