Fashion Innovators...
Mary Quant
Trend innovators like designers
Mary Quant and the Parisian
counterpart Andre Courreges
have been credited with giving us
the invention of the mini skirt in
the 1960’s. The credit seems to
have been favoured more towards
Quant who reportedly is said to
have named the mini skirt after her
favourite car the Mini. The mini
influence is still clearly visible today.
vidal sassoon
British hair stylist Vidal Sassoon
has been credited with creating
some of the most iconic haircuts
in the 60’s revolutionising the hair
dressing industry with precise,
geometric swing bobs which
transformed the stiff 1950’s up do.
He transformed the hairdressing
industry from the 50s influence into
a new era giving women a relaxed,
edgy and stylish look redefining the
past decades.
Yves Saint Laurent
The late master of fashion Yves
Saint Laurent in his Spring
Summer 1966 Haute Couture
collection introduced “Le Smoking”
the female Tuxedo redefining
the female silhouette and almost
turning the fashion industry on
its head if not scandalising it at
that time. Before this the Tuxedo
was always a male domain. This
innovation has become a wardrobe
stable for generations, the epitome
of sex appeal and a symbol of what
one may call girl power. In today’s
view it could easily be considered
the alternative it the little black
dress.
andy warhol
Andy Warhol was an American
artist who was a leading
figure in the movement of pop
art. He particularly explored the
relationship between advertising,
artistic expression and celebrity
culture. He was an icon if not easily
one of the most celebrated of the
pop art movement that started off in
the 1950s.
grace jones
Iconic singer and actress Grace
Jones presented the androgynous
unconventional gender identity of
herself uniquely, whilst celebrating
masculinity almost over her
femininity and making bold
expressive fashion statements in
the process. On and off stage she is
the ultimate fashion diva and icon.
Not everyone however will be
a style icon. While some will
be trends setters and innovators,
majority will follow and be
influenced by these outstanding
individuals, industry professionals
and experts. Celebrity culture, the
norm of the present where most
famous people are now considered
celebrity fashion designers offer
their perspectives within the world
of fashion, beauty, cosmetics and
perfumery sectors. They nowadays
influence a great deal of consumer
perception of style, trends, and
products alike. The main forecast
and trends however come from the
main fashion houses who dictate
season after season our style
choices and the diffusions that filter
down the consumer chain from
high street stores to mass markets.
