It was Tom Wills, former football<br />
captain of Rugby School in England,<br />
who brought rugby – and the ball<br />
– to Australia, as something to keep<br />
cricketers fi t during the winter months.<br />
He revised the rules to ‘Melbourne<br />
Rules’ with three others and formed<br />
the Melbourne Football Club in 1858.<br />
The fi rst recorded match took place<br />
between Scotch College and Melbourne<br />
Grammar School in the same year.<br />
(The two have competed annually ever<br />
since.) The rules were updated in 1866<br />
and competition began between eight<br />
foundation clubs.<br />
