Probably Just a Coincidence
By: Dan Roberts / Publisher
“
Imitation is the highest form of flattery.”
I’ve been referencing that cliché quite a
bit over the last month as, once again, such
imitation strikes again.
Now let me immediately state that I’m not complaining, nor are we
going to do anything about these “coincidences.” It is what it is.
But it does seem that the “other” publication, the Las Vegas Review
Journal truly likes what we have been doing.
It started a few years ago, when they introduced a new weekly “question
and answer series featuring notable Las Vegans.” The column name:
Vegas Voices.
While the name “sounds familiar” who are we to start cease-and-desist
litigation against Mr. Adelson? Everyone here just decided to grin and
bear it - however it would certainly be nice if we were ever featured in the
weekly column.
Then we started reading how the RJ was claiming sole credit for its
reporting on the guardianship scandal. Regular readers obviously know
better, since that has been a cornerstone of our monthly editions for over
2 ½ years!
But reading their “occasional” articles, you would swear that it alone
uncovered this issue, even though The Vegas Voice (not to be confused
with Vegas Voices) began exposing this cesspool six months prior to the
RJ’s “exclusive” original story.
And by the way, one of their named sources quoted is our political
editor Rana Goodman. That’s correct, my Rana.
Then finally last month, the RJ proudly rolled out its new front page
logo and design. It “selected” the Las Vegas skyline. As the photo indicates,
does it look familiar?
That idea was by our president and graphic designer extraordinaire Ray
Sarbacker. Yeah, he did it first; starting with our January, 2013 edition!
Like I said, no use in complaining; and yes, we are more than humbled
that Nevada’s largest newspaper looks to our publication for ideas. We
even admit that the cliché rings true - imitation is truly the highest form
of flattery.
What will the Review Journal do in the upcoming months? We’ll let you
know… as soon as we do it first.
It’s A Beautiful
Frame Up!
by Crystal Czerkas Sarbacker
Crystal Czerkas-One of the things my husband
Sarbacker
Ray and I enjoy about selling
my Dad’s paintings is showing the art and how it can
turn a wall into a home’s centerpiece. But finding the
right painting is only the first step. It’s framing that often
brings out the full beauty of a painting and is as important
as frosting on a cake.
When it comes to my Dad’s work, Ray and I are so
familiar with his art, we are happy to personally assist
with the framing process. There are some framing basics,
though, which can give any aspiring art lover a good
start. For example, art created on paper, needs a frame
which holds a glass to protect it. Frame shops and some
hobby stores carry different types of glass which can
prevent or reduce glare and actually protect against the
fading of your art. There are also some plastics which
almost look like glass and might be a money saver. But if
you’re framing watercolors, drawings, serigraphs, limited
edition prints or anything you want to preserve - like
your grandchild’s first
masterpiece - you’ll
need to frame it with
quality glass. You can
also enhance your
painting by selecting
a paper mat or
two to fit within the
frame and create a
border around your
artwork.
Many art suppliers
sell frames and
mats in basic colors
that are precut in standard sizes. These items
can make picture framing a simple “diy“project.
Next month, I’ll tell you how to display important art
and paintings on canvas. In the meantime, if you have
any questions about framing or my Dad’s artworks, please
email me at Merryman2@aol.com.
The painting shown here is by Crystal’s Dad, the
award winning artist Victor Czerkas, the only known
private student of the great Russian impressionist,
Nicolai Fechin. Want more info....?
Expanding Our Entertainment
By: Evan Davis / Entertainment Editor
It’s Show Time!
It’s May and Spring is in full bloom - but it
feels more like Summer.
As detailed throughout this edition, May and June are packed with 3
fantastic shows that The Vegas Voice is presenting; including our Twilight
Affairs at the Silverton’s Veil Pavilion.
We will have our Twilight Affairs shows at the Silverton’s Veil Pavilion
in May, September, October, November and December. Plus, a very special
concert on Sunday, August 20 th at 3 pm.
It will be “The Summer of Love” a 50-year celebration concert
hosted by Mark Giovi and Genevieve Dew. We’ll have a slew of
entertainers and singers performing songs from 1967. There will be
more information in upcoming editions, but we can guarantee that the
summer concert will be “groovy.”
For those of you who are too young to remember, 1967 was called The
Summer of Love. Don’t ask me why, I don’t want to embarrass myself.
It will however be a spectacular line-up with performers and our Musical
Director, Gary Anderson will be in charge of the band.
Tickets are available NOW by calling The Vegas Voice or myself.
Some of the other shows we will have during 2017 (besides our variety
theme shows) are: the music of Rogers and Hammerstein, The Phat Pack,
Rock to Broadway and the Tribute Artist Showcase.
The theaters and showrooms are at the Silverton, and your community
clubhouses - Sun City MacDonald Ranch, the Starbright Theatre and
Desert Vista Ballroom in Sun City Summerlin, Sun City Aliante
Mark Giovi & Genevieve Dew will be hosting our
“Summer of Love” Concert
and the Summerlin Community, Siena. That’s a lot of “Sun” but we’re
covering the whole valley - north, south, east and west.
There is no reason you can’t make it to one of these shows as ticket
prices range from FREE to $20. Where else can you see this type of quality
performances with many Broadway performers for a small stipend?
Now I know we’ve only been talking about what I’m producing
with The Vegas Voice, but there is so much that we are bringing to the
community that I thought it was warranted. Everyone: get out there and
support the local entertainers and help keep music alive.
*My first “On the Town” TV Celebrity Interview is now history. A great,
big “thank you” to my first guests – Pia Zadora and Sonny Charles.
his free email weekly Calendar of Events at www.EvanDavisJazz.
com. Email him at: evan@thevegasvoice.net.
Along with fellow Vegas Voice columnist Evan
Davis, and with thanks to the wonderful people at
Humana, we are back on the air. “On the Town”
will be a twice monthly TV show.
Evan is the host for the “Celebrity Interviews” at the Summerlin location
and I have the honors at the Green Valley Humana Neighborhood Center.
And what a line-up for our respective initial shows!
Evan had the beautiful Pia Zadora along with singer legend Sonny
Charles. And to match his “celebrity power” I had legendary King of
Comedy (and fellow Vegas Voice columnist) Marty Allen, and his equally
beautiful and talented wife, singer Karon Kate Blackwell.
We were joined by the talented teen star Julia Rose Gruenberg from the
hit television series “Baskets” on FX Channel. And I am so fortunate to
have as my announcer/sidekick, the man with the golden voice, Nevada
Broadcaster Hall of Fame Jon Lindquist.
What a great way to start the show. And my guest next month will be
another comedy legend – Rich Little.
By the way, the audience approved my opening monologue that
included the “Top 5 Reasons to Fly United Airlines”:
8
We’re Back On the Air!
1. They have Chinese takeout!
A Real Man’s Man
By: Dan Roberts / Publisher
“Let me ask you a question. Are you really a
wimp?” Over the years, I have been called many
names, but “wimp?”
As the “boss” nothing gives me greater satisfaction than exchanging
thoughts and comments about our publication. While I appreciate when
people remark how much they “love the paper” (and now magazine) I
nonetheless marvel and even admire those who take the time to criticize
various articles and columnists - especially yours truly.
Anyway to make a long story short, a reader recently approached me and
with a scowl on his face, directed the above remarks.
To this gentleman’s mind, my columns and actions are nothing less
than glorifying my never-ending cowardly conduct in bowing down to the
political editor (and my Ladylove) Rana Goodman – always doing whatever
she says and wants.
“Stand up for yourself,” he advised. Don’t be afraid to man up.”
The next evening, I discussed the person’s opinion with my PILL (partner
in life & love). “Pay it no mind” she announced. “It’s nonsense. And don’t
forget to empty the dishwasher. You know how I dislike reminding you.”
While I (of course) immediately apologized and complied with her request,
I could not shake the guy’s comment from my mind. Perhaps he was right;
maybe I have meekly obeyed Rana’s commands – quickly running to satisfy
her every whim and desire.
“Rana dear” I said after feeding and cleaning up after her dogs and setting
the table for dinner, “Have I become your servant?”
“Of course not,” Rana responded and gave me that dreaded “look.” “Did
you ever think he was jealous of what we have? Now why don’t you go get the
pizza. I’m starving.”
As I faithfully drove back from the take-out restaurant; making sure there
were extra packages of parmesan cheese (my Rana loves parmesan cheese) I
began to wonder if my now existence is dedicated to being nothing more than
a slave; always cowering to the dictates of Ms. Goodman.
“Rana, could I be so wrong?” I said as I began clearing the table and
washing the dishes. “Is my life with you a lie?”
“Don’t be ridiculous” she said. “Why would you believe such silliness? And
make sure you take out the garbage. You came close to leaving the house
without doing so last time and I almost had to do it.”
“And make it quick. Judge Judy is almost on and then we need to have a
discussion about your bathroom etiquette. The toilet seat was in the wrong
position.”
Hurriedly wheeling the trash cans to the curb, I realized that the reader was
absolutely wrong. I’m not a wimp. I’m a real man’s man.
How do I know? It’s simple - Rana told me
*Speaking of serving my Don(na) Quixote as her faithful squire, Sancho
Panza, there we were last month before the Nevada legislature in Carson City.
We both testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on the (further) need
for guardianship reform.
We’ll have more information next month as, once again, we expect to
deliver all guardianship petitions to the Nevada Assembly. I’ll name the
good guys – and those not so good who refuse to clean up this guardianship
cesspool.
Senator Becky Harris with Rana
holding guardianship reform law
By: Beverly Washburn / Hollywood Memories
In 1958 I was cast in one of 3 episodes I did
on Wagon Train. This particular episode
starred Lou Costello and was titled: The Tobias
Jones Story.
What was interesting about this episode is that it was Lou Costello's (of
Abbott and Costello fame) only dramatic role. And that it was written by
Harry Von Zell.
Sadly, many of our wonderful stars and personalities are often forgotten
as years go by; however, many readers will remember Harry. He is most
famous for being the announcer on the old George Burns show. He also
played one of their befuddled neighbors.
Harry started his career in 1927 and worked with the likes of Eddie
Cantor, Bing Crosby, and Dinah Shore, to name just a few. He also did a
few acting parts in various movies and TV shows.
But what he was notoriously known for was his blooper which earned
him an honorary award for the immortal "National Hall of Bloopers."
Harry’s entry was when on the radio he referred to President Herbert
Hoover as Hoobert Heever!
I've mentioned in past columns that many of the stars I worked with
were not familiar to me, because I was too young. In this case however,
I knew exactly who he was, as I used to watch Burns and Allen with my
parents.
My Day in a Property Brothers Video
By: Dianne Davis / That’s Entertainment
How does a 70 plus year old woman get
to be in a music video with the Property
Brothers? Apply.
They were looking for unique acts so I sent a photo of me with my
puppet Charlene. (File that under things we didn't know about Dianne.)
The Property Brothers recognized me and thought I would be a
fun fit with a character they had scripted – an uptight reporter from
“Architecture Quarterly.” Reverse type-casting!
I got the call. The next day I got another call. Would I ….um, can't
tell you, it would be a spoiler. I said, “Do you know me? I'm pretty much
up for anything.”
The day of the shoot I am there at 7 a.m. (If you know me, you know
there is no 7 a.m. in my universe, but this is special.)
What's it like doing a music video with the adorable talented Property
Brothers and dozens of others? A long interesting day that stretched until
almost nightfall. Was it worth it? Absolutely.
A very interesting cast of characters. I recommend that you watch
the video NOW! Find it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrNx_
VXmkyI .
7:30 a.m. wardrobe. I brought choices for the “Uptight reporter.” Scarf,
blazer, etc. Approved. Then sit in the tent as dozens of young hard-bodies
come by checking their skimpy bathing suits for the pool party scenes.
My first scene – ring the doorbell. Scene 2 rehearsal – They open the
door and Jonathan looks at me and says, “This will be fun. We've never
Remembering Harry Von Zell
May 2017
seen Dianne not smiling.” And it was fun.
Hours of hanging in the tent between “my scenes” and getting to chat
with a lot of interesting people… and a few airheads too. The Craft Tent
was filled with delicious food all day.
I got to meet Buddy the monkey, and I ate lunch with Jonathan Scott
– a most personable guy. And at the end of the day, yes, of course they
paid me.
Would I have done it just for the adventure? I'll never tell.
In addition to The Vegas Voice, Dianne Davis is a reporter for Sun
City Anthem TV (SCA-TV) specializing in entertainment and is a
columnist for www.lasvegasroundtheclock.com.
He was one terrific man and
extremely nice to me. Harry
not only wrote the episode, but
interestingly, he also played the
villain in it, because as it turns
out, the murder that Tobias (Lou
Costello) is about to be hanged
for, was actually committed by
Harry's character.
He was absolutely wonderful
and believable in the role. In this
photo, that's me crying (what
else is new) as I KNOW Tobias
didn't commit the crime.
I loved doing that episode and have many fond memories of it. It was a
delightful cast and I was honored to be working with all of them, and of
course, I was already a big fan of Lou Costello and Harry.
Harry died in 1981. I will always treasure my memory of that show.
Until next time, remember: Our lives begin to end the day we become
silent about things that matter...
Insurance Information: Larry's barn
burned down and his wife, Susan, called
the insurance company.
Susan spoke to the insurance agent and said, "We had that
barn insured for fifty thousand, and I want my money." The agent
replied, "Whoa there, just a minute. Insurance doesn't work quite
like that. An independent adjuster will assess the value of what
was insured, and then we'll provide you with a new barn of similar
worth."
There was a long pause, and then Susan replied, "If that's how
it works, then I want to cancel the life insurance policy on my
husband."
Love those Grandchildren: There were three little boys
visiting their grandparents. The oldest came out and asked his
grandpa, "Can you make a sound like a frog, Grandpa?
Grandpa (being in a kind of ill mood) responds, "No, I don't
really want to make the sound of a frog now." A few minutes later,
the second little boy comes out and asks his grandfather, "Will you
please make a sound like a frog?"
Grandpa again says, "No, not now. I don't really want to do that.
I'm in a grumpy mood. Maybe later." Then the third little boy
comes out and says, "Grandpa, oh please, please, please will you
make a sound like a frog?"
"Why do you boys want me to make a sound like a frog?"
Grandpa asked. The little boy replied with a hopeful face, "Well,
Mom said that when you croak we get to go to Disneyland!"
Forget Eli. Who Was Laura Nyro?
By: Adrea Nairne-Barrera / 60s to 60
For years, I have been having the same
argument that the song “Eli’s Coming”
was sung by the 5 th Dimension first and all we
hear on throwback radio is the Three Dog Night version.
Well, it turns out I was wrong - and so were my friends. I got mixed
up because it was actually written and released by its author, Laura
Nyro a couple of years before the Three Dog Night recording.
This came up again as I was still perplexed by the meaning of
the whole song in the first place. I found it on You Tube only to be
reminded what a great artist she really was. Now I got teary eyed with
my memories of listening to her haunting versions of songs.
She never revealed the meaning of the song although some
speculated on its connection to her Jewish heritage, or alternatively
a lost or harmful love. Opinions are all over the place, so we’ll never
know because she died of ovarian cancer at the young age of 49 in
1997.
I also know why I was confused about the 5 th Dimension. Laura
wrote “Wedding Bell Blues,” “Sweet Blindness” and “Stoned Soul
Picnic” putting them on the music map.
Barbra Streisand sang “Stoney End” and Blood, Sweat & Tears
did “And When I Die,” both Nyro songs. When “Eli’s Coming”
was recorded later by Three Dog Night, it took off and her own
Laura Nyro
performance was overshadowed.
The style and passion in Streisand’s voice is perfection listening to
her sing “Walk On By” or “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” even though
she didn’t write them. We are completely swept away in her sea of
emotion.
To really understand the late 60s, going to those original artists’
versions brings me to a very comforting place. I felt included in the
music and my voice was heard through them. The true artists of that
time knew how to tell a story without beating up our brain cells in
the process.
Thank you Laura Nyro. I had forgotten for a while, but now I’m
back.
Adrea Nairne-Barrera’s writing focus these days are on
observations, celebrations and complaints about life in the 1960s
to being in your 60’s. You can contact her at: sixties2sixty@
Chuck Berry: Mr. Rock “n” Roll
By: Yvonne Cloutier / Musical Moments
John
Lennon
s a i d
of Chuck Berry, “If you
tried to give rock ‘n’ roll
another name, you might
call it Chuck Berry.” Bob
Dylan called Berry “the
Shakespeare of rock ‘n’ roll.”
Between 1955-1965,
Berry’s perfectly crafted
masterpiece songs developed
a new art form with major components of rhythm and blues, making
the rock ‘n’roll era. Some of his greatest compositions and recordings
were:
Maybellene, his first hit, having clever language of a narrator
“motorvatin” in a car chase after an elusive girl;
Roll over Beethoven, about his sister monopolizing the piano
playing classical music;
Rock and Roll Music, using T-Bone Walker’s technique of bending
two strings at once, which Berry “roughed up” turning that into a
rock ’n’ roll charm for him, and
Johnny B. Goode, one of the most recognizable songs in the
history of popular music!
Chuck Berry, born in 1926 as Charles Edward Anderson was raised
in a segregated, middle-class neighborhood of St. Louis. He learned
music in a public school and church, where many young blacks
learned the Blues rhythm, country guitar licks, and Chicago-Blues
storytelling style.
Due to his troubled life with the law, he wrote most of his songs
after 23. He received a degree in hairdressing and cosmetology,
worked as a beautician, and on his father’s farm.
He married Themetta Suggs, his only wife, in 1948, and had 4
children. He was working on an album about her when he died.
Berry went through a dry period after his last prison stay and then
had his biggest hit in 1972 with a double entendre novelty song, The
Ding-a-Ling.
His recording of Johnny B. Goode was one of four American songs
included in the Gold Discs, which was launched into space in 1977
on Voyager I & II.
He received many awards; including a Grammy and was first
inductee into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. It was said, “no one in
this room would be here tonight if not for this man.”
Berry was rock’s master theorist and conceptual genius, the rock
pioneer songwriter who understood what the kids wanted before they
knew themselves.
Yvonne Cloutier, a former teacher/principal, with a music
background, specializes in ragtime piano. She reports about
music on SCA-TV.com/Anthem Alive! You can contact her at www.
Ms Senior Nevada Visits
Carson City!
By: Charlie Christy / Executive Director
- Ms. Senior Nevada
If you never been to our state
capitol. . .for goodness sakes
plan a trip to explore the fascinating
town of Carson City. A group of Ms
Senior Nevada gals and friends,
journeyed north, and witnessed our
legislature in action.
You would have been proud of our
gals and their interfacing with our State
Senators and Assembly members who
are so busy with committee meetings, etc. It’s a miracle they ever get
anything accomplished, but they do.
Our trip to Carson City was four days by car or two by air, via Reno. We
filled every moment. The highlight is always the visit and photo op with
our Governor.
Add the tour of the Mansion, the Nevada State Historical Museum, the
Textile Museum (former first ladies’ gowns on display) Virginia City and,
of course, the many delicious eating places - including Schott’s Bakery
and the World Famous Sheepherder Bread in Bishop, California, it’s a
trip to remember.
Plan to join us next year. You be enchanted with the area and the fine
people you’ll meet.
Proposed Rules of Golf Changes
By: Mike Landry / Golf Fore Ever
The USGA and the RNA meet every four
years to review and make changes to the
rules of golf. This time they have combined
their efforts to modernize the rules of golf and to make it easier to
understand and to speed up play.
Keep in mind these proposed rule changes will not go in effect until
January, 2019 and the committee may decide not to implement some of
them. For full details, go to: USGA.org/rules.
Some proposals include - on the green, spike marks may be repaired and
a ball that’s accidently kicked or moved during a practice stroke or while
marking the ball is simply put back. Putting while the flag is in the hole is
also allowed.
Accidently kicking or stepping on your ball in the rough causing it to
move, is once again, put back. Lastly, you will be allowed to identify your
ball in the rough, mark it, and put it back without notify any opposing
player. All of these rules with “No Penalty.”
See you on the links.
of both the Nevada State Seniors Golf Club and Winterwood Men’s
Group. He can be reached at: airmikel1@cox.net
Oh Yeah...I Can Be Cool
By: Vicki Wentz / Vicki’s Voice
My friend had four tickets to a concert
by a group called Mandolin Orange.
This group consists of Andrew Marlin and his
wife, Emily Frantz. Their music is billed as “Alternative Roots
Music” or “Americana” or folk/bluegrass.
You’d never guess this about me, but I’m not very “alternative.” I
generally don’t enjoy roots (not even sure what that means), Americana
or folk, and I take a dim view of bluegrass.
This music just makes me think of Peter, Paul and Mary, and the big
“folk music revival of 1961” ...not that I was even alive then. I just have a
negative reaction to that folksy stuff. But I accepted the invitation with as
much fake enthusiasm as I could muster.
Then, I found out the concert would be at a venue called Legends,
which I had always looked upon as a dump of biblical proportions.
Finally, I heard that the concert would not begin until 10 pm - the exact
time I am normally smoothing the covers over myself, donning reading
glasses (shut up) and beginning the 45 seconds of reading that I am
committed to before the book falls on my face and I slip into dreamland.
Even with the folk alternative music, the venue, the start time - I smiled
bravely (as I am always inclined to do) and headed out. My dog stared at
me curiously, no doubt concerned that I was forgetting it was bedtime and
perhaps going out when it was already dark may be the start of dementia.
This was a BYOB event. My three friends were prepared accordingly. I
however brought a can of fizzy water because alcohol at night keeps me
awake, and I was hoping to sleep through most of the concert.
We arrived and had to show I.D.s, which I thought was adorable. As we
entered, I was surprised and delighted at how well someone had restored
Legends to an extremely presentable and respectable venue!
What was not wonderful was one of the “event security” officials
approaching me officiously.
“Ma’am, I’m sorry, but you’re not allowed to have La Croix in here.”
I didn’t immediately register this for two reasons:
1. I thought it was just gratuitous cruelty to call me “Ma’am” when I’d
just been carded at the door; and
2. I didn’t know my fizzy water was called La Croix. And it hadn’t even
been opened! But, I suppose I could have shot some vodka into it with a
hypodermic needle (I hear lots of grandmothers do this).
Mandolin Orange took the stage at around 10:15, and to my wondrous
astonishment, I loved their music! We all decided it was a mix of Alison
Krauss, James Taylor, Union Station, with a dash of Emmylou Harris. (The
millennials surrounding us would likely stare at us blankly if we voiced
that, since we were like the only people there over a thousand years old.)
I really wanted to get up and dance, but then I would have had to move
- my children still have friends here.
You
may
have
already heard of “John of
God”, who is considered one
of the most powerful healers
of the 20th century.
Born João Teixeira de Faria,
in Cachoeira da Fumaça he had
only two years of schooling and
no medical training. He considers
himself a simple farmer who
travelled from village to village to
act as God's vehicle for healing.
De Faria was told by his spirit
guides to go to the small Goiás
town of Abadiânia in order to
expand his work and fulfill his
life's mission of helping the
masses. He says he arrived there
around 1978 and sat on a chair by
the road, where hobbling and sick
people began to flock to him.
As he helped those seeking cures
for various illness and conditions,
the numbers began to increase to
thousands of people a day. There
he develped Casa de Dom Inacio
de Loyola - a 1,000-acre property
with a small cattle ranch.
Most of his income, however,
comes from his passion fruit
Healing the Hopeless
By: Ali Guggenheim / Psychic Phenomenon
preparations, the single herb he
prescribes to cure a variety of
ailments. Though there are no
guarantees at the Casa where
anything seems to be possible,
everyone experiencing this
phenomenon claims to benefit in
some way.
One man was clinically dead
for 5 hours and is now alive to
recount his amazing story. Today,
millions of people recount their
cures by John of God; recoveries
from cancers, serious illnesses and
all kinds of incurable diseases.
De Faria regularly prescribes
meditation and walks to a nearby
waterfall as partial treatments
and psychic surgery. He claims
not to remember anything of
the surgeries he performs and
uses energized mineral water
with spiritual energies instead of
anesthetics.
Although asked to "come
clean" by skeptics, he insists; "I
do not cure anybody. God heals,
and in his infinite goodness
permits the Entities to heal and
console my brothers. I am merely
an instrument in God's divine
hands."
It’s a Dirty Job...
By: Stu Cooper / Happy Destinations
One of the "perks" of the travel business
is something called "Fam" (short for
familiarization) trips. That's where people
like me get invited by tourist boards or hotel chains to visit and
inspect their countries and/or hotel properties.
For a price, (because it always costs something, plus an air ticket) I get
to spend a few days running around an exotic location visiting numerous
hotels and sight of interest in a particular location.
I found myself last month visiting the sunny dry (Vegas like) island
of Aruba. Just 50 miles of the South American coast, Aruba is about the
most southern of Caribbean islands. So far south that it falls outside the
tropical rain belt and has very little annual rain.
If the beach is your thing, then Aruba is for you. The beaches are wide
white soft sand on the most popular Eagle and Palm beach.
All the major hotels like the Ritz Carleton, Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton,
among others have beautiful expansive beaches. The all-inclusive Riu
Palace also sits right on the beach.
However, all-inclusive might not be the way to go in Aruba as there are
any number of great restaurants all over the island. A trip to the island
capital of Oranjestad is a must.
There are any number of great restaurants, shops and stores to stroll
through and a marina area that is fun to walk around and people watch.
And for those of you who must have gambling, Aruba has numerous
casinos to make you feel as if you were back home.
*On another note, the Phat Pack cruise is a big hit. We still have space
in all categories but the cabins are starting to fill up. This is going to be a
great fun cruise on the Carnival Splendor, January 27 - February 3, 2018.
The Flood That Erased a City
By: Kathy Manney / Around Our World
Northern California and the Pacific
Northwest have experienced abundant
rain this year, weather comparable to 1948,
when an entire Oregon town was obliterated on Memorial Day.
Metropolitan Portland was warm. Mountain snow, spring rains and
above normal temperatures brought severe flooding along the Columbia
River.
My mom was a long-distance telephone operator in Portland. Living in
Vancouver, Washington her daily commute took her across the Columbia
River’s Interstate Bridge, past Vanport.
The community of Vanport, Oregon’s second largest city, named for
its location between Portland and Vancouver, has been demolished by
flooding water from the Columbia River resulting in a collapse of the dike
protecting Vanport’s west side.
Every long distance switchboard became jammed with callers, as
Vanport submerged in 10 to 20 feet of rubble-laden water. Surging flood
water propelled whole apartment units through two main artery roads
leading to the Interstate Bridge, cutting off bridge approaches.
Sheltered on river lowlands by a protective railroad fill dike, Vanport was
swiftly constructed to accommodate shipyard workers during World War II.
It remained a thriving community – until the dike gave.
The teeming river inundated a large section of north Portland. Portland’s
square white two-story commercial airport, erected near the river, stood
strong. A water line later showed near its roof. The building still stands and
is home to the National Weather Service.
Thoroughfares connecting Portland and Vancouver disappeared. The
Interstate Bridge connecting Oregon and Washington closed to all but
emergency traffic.
With train, mail and wire services severed, Vancouver was instantly
inaccessible. Flood conditions lasted 20-days.
Clean-up was slow. Relics sat open and withered like scattered bones.
Debris entwined in trees and telephone wires.
Vanport remains the most destructive disaster in Columbia River history.
A transitional war time community without generations of families,
Oregon’s once second largest city was never reconstructed.
With rich intricate wetlands and sloughs, Vanport’s marsh river
lowlands are today considered an environmentally sensitive area. The
flood that erased a town, forever inscribed in those who experienced it,
their remembrances a slice of Oregon first-person history.
Your Choice?
By: Dan Hyde / Call to Action
In case you missed it, there was an election
held last month to choose two mayors
and city council representatives for Las Vegas,
Henderson and North Las Vegas.
To say it was shocking that out of a combined voter registered electorate
of 589,177, only 55,867 (or 9.84%) of you actually exercised your right
to choose who will represent you over the next four years is more than a
gross understatement.
What this really means is that most of the public let 55,867 people dictate
who will be making policy decisions that impact all of us. Representative
government?
Are you kidding me? What is so representative of over 90% of you
voluntarily disenfranchising yourselves form the governing processes?
I don’t know of a single person who doesn’t have something negative
to say about those who are elected - and yet, when it comes time to vote
and choose someone new, the vast majority turn a blind eye. You abdicate
your right to choose to the very small minority of voters who DO exercise
that right!
To those of you interested, there is another final election next month
(June 13 th ) to decide several races that did not exceed the 50% threshold
to be elected outright in the April primary election.
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND VOTE!
A Very Busy Month
By: Rana Goodman / On My Soapbox
I
’m sure most regular readers can imagine
the thoughts and feelings of our “staff”
and victim family members as we walked into
the court room and spotted April Parks. She was dressed in prison
scrubs and handcuffed.
The interested thing was that this sociopath looked at the families that
she left financially devastated and smiled at them! When she gave her plea
to the judge, you guessed it, she said: not guilty!
Were you to look up the traits of a sociopath among them you would
find: Lack of remorse, shame or guilt. They don’t see others around
them as people, but only as targets, opportunities and victims. We
guarantee that we will be attending Ms. Parks court proceedings and will
bring our readers updates.
Next on my agenda was the Nevada Legislature. There were quite a few
bills that were of interest.
Let’s start with SB229 that Senator Becky Harris sponsored on The Vegas
Voice’s behalf. That is the guardianship bill that enables your nominated
guardian form to be registered with the Nevada’s Secretary of State’s lock
box system.
The nomination form that Publisher Dan initially designed was used
as a template by the legislature. It has now been tentatively updated and
expanded. We’re proud to report that “our bill” was passed by the Senate
(thank you Senator Harris) and now goes to the Assembly, along with
several other important guardianship bills.
Senator Mark Manendo has two animal abuse bills, one for a mandatory
state registry for animal abusers. It was likewise passed by the senate and
will move on to the assembly.
Another bill I personally have a keen interest in is the “death with dignity
bill” - SB 261. This is a bill that would allow a patient with a terminal
illness to self-administer a life ending medication.
I understand that many people do not agree with such a concept,
however, if you have ever had someone you love suffer through a slow and
agonizing sickness (with no hope of a cure) sometimes mercy might be
appropriate in letting go of a loved one.
Last session, when this bill was first introduced, all I could think about
was my father who we lost in 2003. His doctor had prescribed Predesone
and the side effect destroyed the red cells in his bone marrow.
There was nothing the specialists could do to save him and he used to
beg me to “help him go.” All I could do was take him to hospice care and
for that, my mother never forgave me.
By then, he would not allow anyone but immediate family to see him.
SB261 would have at least given him his dignity in the end.
SB150 is another interesting guardianship bill. Years ago our legislature
passed into law a little sentence that said professional guardians must be
certified by a guardianship center in Philadelphia.
Why do you suppose that is? Why should we send money out-of-state
when it can stay in Nevada?
Dan and I previously took a training class to be guardians at the Public
Guardian’s office. Why can’t they train someone to give the certification
course - after all, the public guardian is paid $100,000.00 per year.
Avoid Guardianship
By: Robert Telles / Accolade Law
Folks are concerned with avoiding guardianship. A guardianship
is opened when a person (called the principal here) can no
longer handle his or her own affairs.
Often, a well-meaning relative seeks the guardianship to protect the
principal from harm. Unfortunately, there are also times where the
guardianship is being sought by someone that the principal would
not choose as a guardian. Well-crafted powers of attorney may avoid
this.
If you fear you may one day be that principal, the durable financial
power of attorney and the durable healthcare power of attorney are
documents that together may allow you to avoid guardianship. This
involves selecting a trusted relative or friend to act on your behalf
should you need help.
The grant of this power will cover most, if not all circumstances
depending on how well they are drafted. And, even if a guardianship
is needed, you can nominate that same person to act as your guardian
to keep others from stepping in. That’s peace of mind.
Rob Telles is the founder of Accolade Law, a law firm that serves
clients in guardianship, estate planning and probate. His office
BAT Tax Would Punish Seniors
By: Victoria Seaman / Victoria’s Corner
Congress has some tough decisions to
make, and right now they are facing
one of their toughest. Lost in the recent
battles over the affordable health care act is a costly new tax that
could hurt us just as much, if not more. It’s called the Border
Adjustment Tax (BAT), and it could skyrocket the already high
costs of items you use every day.
The BAT is the brainchild of House Speaker Paul Ryan, and Ways and
Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady. It is essentially a national sales
tax on imports.
If the BAT is successful, anything coming into the US would be slapped
with a 20% tax; ensuring you and I would pay more for everyday items
we need - such as gasoline, groceries, food, clothing, and even medicine.
Most of the money we spend every day is spent on retail somewhere. Yet
the retail industry would be unfairly hit the hardest by this potential tax.
The reality is a lot of the things you and I buy simply cannot be
manufactured or produced in the US, and the retail industry, which is
responsible for nearly one out of every four American jobs, would be
forced to decide between laying off employees or passing the tax down to
you and I. There are simply no winners if the BAT passes.
The BAT is a classic example of Washington not thinking about the
consequences of their actions and how they affect every day Americans,
especially seniors who live off a fixed income. Instead of taxing the
products we need most, let’s look at lowering rates across the board,
and scaling back the size of government to pay for the lower taxes as
conservatives promised and were elected to do.
In recent weeks, several Republican Senators have expressed their
misgivings with the BAT and as a member of the tax-writing, Senate
Finance Committee, Senator Dean Heller should make his opposition to
the BAT clear now. The stakes are high, and Nevada seniors need Senator
Heller to step up now before it gains any political traction.
Hospice Myths
By: Regale Harris / Your Kindred Team
Hospice is about living well and building
relationships, using the gift of time,
giving a voice to wishes and desires while
assuring values are respected.
Myth #1: Hospice is about living. Hospice is actually a philosophy of
care that focuses on quality of life issues when the course of a patient’s
disease can no longer be reversed or
when a patient has chosen comfort over
cure. Hospice care is provided wherever
patients live, in their own home, assisted
living facility or long-term care facility.
Myth #2: Hospice is chosen when there is
no hope or when “nothing else can be done.”
Hospice is the “something else that CAN be
done” for patients and their families when an illness cannot be cured.
Hospice is not an end to treatment – it is a shift to comfort- oriented care
which is focused on helping the patient live their life to the fullest.
In addition to managing pain and symptoms, we provide extensive
counseling and social service support that addresses psychosocial and
emotional/spiritual aspects of coping with a terminal illness.
Myth #3: Hospice is only for people with cancer. While about half of
patients receiving hospice care are cancer patients, the other half suffer
from illnesses including heart disease, lung disease, dementia, stroke and
neuromuscular diseases.
Myth #4: Hospice is for dying people. Hospice is family-centered care.
It is focused as much on the coping family as it is the patient.
Myth #5: Hospice is for patients who don’t require a high level
of care. Hospice is serious medicine. Kindred Hospice is Medicare
certified and we employ skilled and experienced medical and nursing
personnel who are capable of providing State-of-the-art palliative care.
Myth #6: Hospice is only for people who can accept death.
Fact: While those affected by advanced
illness come to terms with their prognosis,
Kindred Hospice provides psychosocial
support to patients and their families. Social
Workers are readily available to discuss all
options, and to facilitate family decisions.
Myth #7: All hospice care is the same. All
licensed hospice programs must provide certain
services according to Medicare, but the range of
support services and programs may differ.
Myth #8: Patients die sooner with hospice care than without. Fact:
Hospice neither hastens nor prevents death. However, it is believed that
hospice patients may live longer once their pain is adequately managed.
Myth #9: Patients must sign a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order
prior to hospice. Although the majority of hospice patients choose to
sign a DNR order prior to entering hospice care, it is not required for
admission. DNR status has no bearing on the care that a patient receives
while enrolled in hospice services.
Myth #10: Physicians lose control of the Plan of care when their
patients enter hospice. The referring physician is a vital member of the
hospice team. In fact, many physicians find that hospice greatly enhances
and extends the care they can provide. Kindred Hospice encourages
physicians to follow their patients through the hospice journey.
Call to Action: Contact Your Senators and Representatives
Attention individuals who care about hearing healthcare!
Legislation has been introduced in the U.S. Senate and U.S.
House that would:
1. Direct the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to create
an over-the-counter classification of hearing aids that requires no
professional involvement.
2. Direct the FDA to consider and rule on whether overthe-counter
hearing aids should bypass
existing, critical safety and efficacy
standards and processes
3. Prohibit states from
creating any consumer
protection laws related to overthe-counter
hearing aids
Passage of this bill would:
1. Eliminate important consumer
protections to all hearing aid purchasers
2. Allow unlicensed and incompetent people to sell hearing aids,
thereby eroding consumer trust, and increase risks of poor results and
fraud.
3. Decrease hearing aid use and satisfaction rates
4. Rely on individuals to properly self-diagnose and self-manage
hearing loss, which can lead to missed medical diagnosis, and improper
hearing assessment.
5. Eliminate critical opportunities for medical referral for comorbidities
and other conditions through an in-person evaluation by a
licensed hearing care professional
Evidence shows when hearing aids are available, over-the-counter
satisfaction rates go down. As a result, leads to inaccurate public
perception hearing aids don’t work, and result in lower overall hearing
aid adoption and use (JapanTrak, 2015).
Professional and individualized hearing evaluations,
custom hearing aids and fittings,
verification tests, and ongoing
counseling and follow-up care
determine patient success.
(MarkeTrak, VII & IX).
Often as we head out for the evening
we have an adorable little clutch,
but an abundance of “necessities” for the
night out. Touch-up makeup for the evening, along with a
phone, ID, and money forces you to get creative with space!
My personals must-haves include all of the above, plus credit card,
business cards, lipstick, liner, gloss, eye shadow, blush, concealer,
perfume and lotion. Now how to get all of that into a bitty bag?
Just a little miniaturizing magic.
While your eye shadow may be in a large pallet, find a similar color
in the smallest single package that holds its own applicator. Do the same
with a blush. They are both flat so they won't take up much room.
As for your lips, as we eat or drink, they become the most in need of a
touch-up. I love to carry a lip colored liner as my base which keeps them
looking nice even as lipstick wears off.
And since liners are long and thin, getting them into the bottom of a
clutch is easy. To top it off, the liner I use (by my company) has a cap
covered brush on one end.
I save lipstick tube space by pre-dipping the brush in my lipstick and
replacing the cap for a ready-to-go application. Then I have both my
lipstick and liner together in the smallest possible space!
You can also use double sided capped brushes in general to put gloss
Helping Deployed Families Cope
By: Chuck Dean / Vet 2 Vet
This month marks 52 years since I
deployed to Vietnam.
I had trained a year on Okinawa and was ready
for the moment, both physically and mentally. During that deployment I
served only one tour of duty and then it was over.
In today’s world however, things are different. Our troops are faced with
the grinding drudgery of multiple deployments in the War on Terror.
Military families are experiencing the emotional upheavals of
deployment on an unprecedented scale. Humanitarian missions and
peace enforcement continue as troops are sent around the world.
Military downsizing has also increased the likelihood that each warrior
will eventually participate in the extension of their missions. The impact
of long family separations is of increasing concern as re-deployments
continue with no end in sight.
I realize that a majority of The Vegas Voice readership are seniors, but
I would also guess that many have family members that are caught in
this “revolving door” of deployment, and share many of their concerns.
The purpose for this topic is to heighten awareness, and encourage you to
help - even in small ways.
There are many challenges for military families during the various
stages of deployment. Anticipating these challenges is a good first step in
minimizing the emotional trauma caused by an extended deployment.
I would suggest that you begin by helping them obtain information,
May 2017
on one side and touch-up concealer on the other end. Again, small and
easy to get into even the smallest bags.
Additionally, utilize your phone space. There are several phone cases
that include small pockets to easily carry your cards. Otherwise since they
are flat, the fit nicely on the side of your bag.
For hand lotion and perfume which I love, next time you’re at the mall,
pick up the little sample packets at the makeup counters. They are flat
and take up no space. Or ask the saleswoman if you can have a mini vial
of your favorite fragrance.
And poof, you’re ready for your evening out!
Linda Bateman-Gomez has an international beauty company
based in Las Vegas that specializes in cosmetics and other beauty
products. Contact Linda at TimelessBeauty2020@gmail.com or
through her website www.fullips.com.
instruction, and advice about deployments from reliable sources. The
best is an organization called “Military OneSource.” (Go to: http://www.
militaryonesource.mil/ 800-342-9647).
Next you can offer to assist the family in establishing a support network;
help them connect with other deployed families to share and encourage
one another. This can include activities such as weekly get-togethers.
You as a caring relative can do much to aid and comfort a deployed
family; even if it is only by babysitting in order to give the parent a break
from single-parenting.
Most of us remember the dark days of the Vietnam War when our troops
were not appreciated or supported. I, for one, want to do my part to ensure
that doesn’t happen again. I hope you do too.
through that experience was led to address the many transitional
issues veterans struggle with. He is the author of several important
books for veterans. All can be found on Amazon at: http://www.
Home Insurance vs. Home Warranty
By: Jim Valkenburg / Insurance Insight
Lately the airwaves are filled with
commercials that promote home
warranties and make a mockery of home
insurance for covering things like zombie attacks. Remember,
these are just commercials and they want you to buy something.
Let’s take a minute to discuss the differences between warranties and
insurance.
A warranty is actually the opposite of insurance. Insurance is put in
place to protect you for events you don’t want to happen (fire, theft,
vandalism, etc.) but warranties are purchased to protect you for events
that are inevitable and eventually will happen (water heater wears out,
refrigerator motor dies, etc.).
Your homeowner’s insurance policy provides coverage in the event of
an “unexpected” loss. A home warranty provides coverage for items that
need maintenance and are “expected” to wear out.
In Las Vegas, with high summer temperatures, your air conditioning
system works very hard and eventually it will need repair or replacement.
This is maintenance and it would be a warranty claim. It is an “expected”
incident and therefore, not an insurance claim.
There are some claims that involve both your home insurance and
your warranty. For example, if your hot water heater breaks and causes
water damage in your home, the repair to your home is covered under
your homeowner’s policy. The hot water heater itself is a maintenance
item so the warranty company would replace it.
There are several companies that sell warranties in Nevada. The costs
vary, depending on what you want to cover under the warranty, but
generally range from $350 - $500 a year for basic coverage, plus more for
enhanced features like pools.
So, why both insurance and warranties? If your home is broken into
and items are stolen, or if there is a fire, or high winds destroy your patio
cover, etc., your insurance carrier will help you get back into the same
position you were before the loss. If a major appliance wears out, a home
warranty is there to protect you and repair or replace those items.
Autonomous Cars: Terrifying or Terrific?
By: BJ Killeen / Down the Road
If a car that drives itself sounds terrifying
to you, you’re not alone.
People who hate to fly say it’s because they
have no control. The same goes for autonomous vehicles. Truth is,
although you may not realize it, many new cars already are semiautonomous.
They can parallel or perpendicular park themselves, can stop
and go in traffic without the driver touching the pedals, and can
even come to a complete stop in a front-end collision if the driver
doesn’t react in time. Most of these systems today, however, can be
turned off if the driver doesn’t want to use them.
Nevada is one of the few states welcoming testing from
manufacturers and other parties with fully autonomous vehicles.
Some say the benefits far outweigh the risks.
Those who are against them have legitimate concerns, such as,
if there’s an accident, who is at fault? How will they co-exist with
piloted cars?
These vehicles use a combination of radar, sonar, lidar (light
detection and ranging) and cameras to function properly. But what
if the lines on the road they read are too light? Or there’s snow?
Or the sensors are blocked?
Obviously, there are many issues that need to be resolved before
we see them as the norm on the highway.
On the plus side, if you can’t drive anymore because of poor
eyesight or your reactions are slow, instead of having to call a car
service, you can jump in your own car and tell it to go anywhere
you want. In the not-to-distant future, it will be possible to order
your groceries directly from your refrigerator, send the car to the
store alone, have the robot load up your groceries, and then send it
back to your house.
Think of the time savings. Or you could take a long trip and sleep
at night while the car was still gathering miles. The possibilities, as
they say, are endless.
Remember, Marie Curie once said. “Nothing in life is to be feared.
It is only to be understood.”
Jim Valkenburg is a retired military officer and insurance
executive. He and his wife owned and operated their own
insurance agency for over 16 years. His primary purpose is to
give out real information that can be used to make intelligent
insurance decisions.
Heartburn & Dentistry
By: James J. White, D.D.S. / Your Dentist
No doubt many of my readers have heard
of GERD (gastro esophageal reflux
disease).
Indeed, many of us are plagued with acid reflux. Proof of this disorder
can be seen when standing in line at the local Walgreens or CVS and
watching the various anti-acids that are being purchased.
Serious damage could also be occurring to your teeth without your
knowledge. When suffering with GERD, acid and undigested food can
come into the esophagus when it is not supposed to - “heartburn!”
Amazingly, the stomach is protected from the caustic hydrochloric acid
that digests our food, but tooth enamel is not. Teeth were not designed to
ever be exposed to such corrosive acid.
The outer layer of our teeth is, as you know, enamel which is the hardest
natural substance of our bodies. However, enamel can be dissolved in acid.
And when acid backs up into the esophagus, minute amounts can end
up in the mouth. This lowers the pH of the mouth creating a very acidic
environment. The enamel can be either worn or dissolved away.
Needless to say, when the enamel is weakened, the teeth are more
susceptible to decay, wear, and of course, cavities. And all of this does not
even begin to describe the destruction of a wonderful smile.
Eating smaller meals, seeking help from a qualified physician,
avoiding spicy, greasy and citrus foods, reducing alcohol consumption,
quitting smoking and losing weight can all assist in reducing acid reflux.
This will not only save your beautiful teeth, but lead to a healthier you.
*What Makes a Good Dentist? I’ve been asked that question
quite a bit since I
began writing these
monthly articles.
A good dentist is
more than just
someone who
might relieve you
of dental pain. It
is a professional
whom you choose
to entrust your
teeth that will:
1. Maintain an
ongoing interest in
the latest scientific
findings.
2. Treat his/her
procedures as a serious art.
3. Be manually dexterous.
4. Never lose the desire to learn.
5. Not up-sell you on a treatment plan with which you feel
uncomfortable.
6. Be compassionate and honest. AND
7. Understand your concerns and provide you with care options that
work to your advantage.
And remember: One is not in good health without good oral health.
“People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.”
M
astering the art/science of dentistry takes
experience, extensive post-graduate education,
and a passion for the art of dentistry.
We offer:
• Implants
• Cosmetic crowns/bridges
Dance it Out!
By: Mary Richard / Health Fitness
Dance is good for your brain. Dancing is
good for your soul! Dance with LIFE,
dance with LOVE, dance with CONVICTION.
I’ve been a dancer most of my life - since a young child. I had way too
much energy, so my mother put me in dance classes at the age of 3. I
loved it and have been a dancer ever since.
Dance has many benefits beyond exercise. Science has proven that
dance improves the memory, increases muscle tone and helps to lower
the risk of dementia.
I’m now in my 72nd year and will continue dancing until I am unable
to! My Zumba classes are a form of exercise as well as dance.
Dancing helps to increase neural activity and helps your balance by
training your brain to achieve opposition with either the right or left area
of your bodies. In my zumba classes, I use this method of opposition to
gear students to utilize both areas of our aging brains.
You can find various methods of dance throughout international
countries. That’s why I love zumba so much. It allows me to learn and
promote various dance methods.
I’ve been to every zumba convention for the past 10 years and although
there are various languages spoken at our international convention,
when the music comes on and we learn new methods, language is
irrelevant and we dance our hearts out!
Enjoy the resurgence of dance classes on TV - from “Dancing with The
Stars” to “So You Think You Can Dance.” There are various dance studios
cropping up, so find a class that will jog your interest.
Look for ballroom, ballet, zumba classes or wherever your heart leads
you. Believe me - it will change your life and health.
You will feel better, sleep better and meet new people who also will
enjoy the love of dance. Remember: Dance like no one is watching!
POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND HAPPY HEALTH TO ALL!
A Multidisciplinary Approach
By: Kyo Mitchell / A Healthier You
Medicine is not simply one approach, or
one discipline.
The human body is so complex that one method
cannot simply cover all the medical problems that humans experience.
When approaching medicine, it is important to understanding the
strengths of each medical discipline, and its methodology.
Let me give you an example. A lot of my patients say: “I hate taking
all these drugs.” Such drugs however have their place and, of course are
important.
What they do is to help stabilize the body's physiological processes in
some way so that your health and well-being do not decline any further.
However, the one thing you have to understand is that pharmaceutical
drugs do not cure the body. Only the body can do that.
The question that should be entering your mind is, “If drugs stabilize
me, but do not necessarily return me to the highest state of function
possible, is there something that can?” That is not a simple question.
For the body to return to a high state of function, it needs the correct
resources and the correct signals in the correct order to repair itself. This
is why nutrition, acupuncture, chiropractic and other disciplines are so
important.
In reference to signals that help the body return to a healthy state of
function, there is one medical approach that is reemerging after nearly
being lost. Approximately a century ago, doctors were using electrical
signals to alter what happened in the body and treat pain and numerous
other medical problems.
These electrical signals could allegedly decrease pain, decrease
inflammation, help tissues and organs recover from trauma and function
more efficiently, just to name a few. This is done without the side effects
commonly seen with drugs.
No form of medicine is perfect. Each has strengths to offer as well
as limitations. By learning to combine the various disciplines to each
medical problem, science will continue to evolve and increase the quality
of life of individuals everywhere.
Improve Your Memory Abilities with Momisms & More
By: Jan Fair / A No-Brainer Minute
eaders emailed to say they used the ideas in my February column for boosting their
Rbrain by improvising a story. (See Vegas Voice archives at www.thevegasvoice.net.)
One woman wrote me about a wonderful moment when her young granddaughter surprised everyone
with her beautiful, insightful, improvised “I Have a Dream” speech. This month, I’m suggesting that we
memorize something rather than improvising. Experts say if we memorize something every day, we will
improve our memorizing abilities.
A No-Brainer Pick
According to The
Harvard Medical School
Guide to Achieving
Optimal Memory by
Aaron P. Nelson, Ph.D. &
Susan Gilbert,“…The
use-it-or-lose-it notion
definitely applies to the
brain.”
Check out this book for
lots of suggestions to
improve your memory.
Things to Memorize
• momisms (look right ==>)
• a short poem
• the chorus of a song
• a few sentences
from a book,
magazine or
newspaper
• a TV advertisement
• lines from a movie
• famous quotations
• a famous speech
the No-Brainer Brain Games series. Please check out her website at www.JanFair.com
Mental Minutes
“Momisms”
1. In one minute, list sayings
that mother always said.
2. Make an alphabetical
list.
Always wear clean socks.;
Because I said so!;
Count your blessings.; …”
Wallet. Remove items that should not be in it. These include your Social Security card (and anything else with
your Social Security Number on it), PINs or passwords, spare keys, and blank checks. Unless you’re heading to
a doctor or health facility for the first time, don’t carry your Medicare card either.
Home office. After ensuring all is correct, shred (with a cross-cut shredder) bank statements, sales & cash
withdrawal ATM receipts, paid credit card statements & utility bills, expired warranties, unsolicited credit
card & insurance offers, and canceled checks (that are not tax related). Destroy old photo IDs. Pay stubs &
medical bills shouldn’t be kept longer than one year; tax returns & pertinent forms (W-2s, 1099s and records
for declared tax deductions) no longer than seven.
Safely store: birth & marriage certificates, family member death certificates, Social Security & Medicare cards,
active passports, divorce decrees, college diplomas, military records, wills, trusts, home deeds, vehicle titles,
and power of attorney paperwork.
Keep secure but accessible: tax returns for the past three years, active appliance warranties & manuals, loan
statements & payment books, insurance policies, a household inventory list (TVs, jewelry, etc.), health benefits
information, and family health records including vaccinations. Keep a record of what is in your wallet, including
the account numbers and contact information for each card (useful if your wallet is lost or stolen.)
Medicine cabinet. Remove and shred pharmacy labels before tossing empty prescription bottles. Hide prescription
medications (particularly painkillers).
Computers and phones. Delete unnecessary & unused files, accounts and apps. If donating or recycling old
computers, cell phones or other devices, erase the memory completely and restore to factory settings.
Ensure that antivirus protection software is up to date on all actively used devices, set for regular “Quick” &
“Full” scans and firewall-enabled. Clear the memory on internet browsers used on your computer and smartphone
at least weekly, to prevent hackers from accessing stored passwords. Enable two-factor identification
on financial and other online accounts; review (and enact) privacy settings on social media accounts and
don’t share sensitive details – address, workplace, family members, upcoming vacation plans or purchases.
Consider getting paperless statements from banks & credit card companies to reduce the risk that information
could be stolen from your mail.
