Spitzweg has included a detailed image with light flowing diagonally across
the canvas in the form of raking light. In this painting the light is coming from
the sun but it is unseen as the image is cropped. The light is coming from the
top left hand corner and diffuses across the canvas naturally.
Spitzweg has also used
atmospheric perspective in the
background to create a sense
of depth. In this background
you can see the bright blue sky
which again creates a sense of
tranquility because it is a clear
day.
The use of the sun in this painting has
been used to create a sense of
tranquility and a clam atmosphere.
Spitzweg has created this effect by using
natural colours that aren’t to bright and
intense. This style and the use of sun
contrasts to the style of Turner and his
loose brushwork and intense colours.
The natural light can also be
represented in Spitzweg’s
use of shadows. Distinct
shadows can been seen in the
bottom half of the painting.
