THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis Where does one begin? I’m on a plane headed to Washington for a meeting about goods movement and activity around and at the ports. I am there representing not only the seaports of Los Angeles, Long Beach and Port Hueneme but also the inland port at Calexico. No one knows where the Trump Administration is on goods movement and trade, other than his ongoing tweets about various things. He did raise tariffs on lumber and other materials from Canada, so that is a concern as it will raise prices on building homes here in USA. out the promise of special treatment on Visas for wealthy Chinese investors. The Desert Sun says ineptitude is gone and in its place is an autocrat. Isn’t that our issue with North Korea, Russia and other dictatorships? Where is the Republican leadership in all of this? Hmmmmm - crickets are the only sound emanating from their Capitol Hill offices. They do gloat that they were able to pass the repeal of Obamacare, effectively forcing 16-24 million people to lose insurance. Let’s hope the Senate stops this reckless behavior. Staff flounders trying to justify it and protect Trump, but then Trump himself admits obstruction of justice by announcing to NBC News News the firing was about the investigation of Russia into election meddling. He then hints about a secret recording system in the Oval Office - remind you of anyone? Jared Kushner, the Trump son-in-law, is entangled in his sisters business dealings as she tries to hold Five Republican members of the House of Representatives from CA have been targeted for defeat in the 2018 election, mostly over their vote on healthcare. But they do come from districts that voted for Clinton last year. Speaking of 2018, the race for Governor is beginning with no fewer than 4 big name Dems in the running and no Republicans to speak of . Let. Governor Gavin Newsom, State Treasurer John Chiang, former LA Mayor Villaraigosa and former Supt of Public Instruction Delaine Easton all in the race. Still to be heard from is current LA Mayor Garcetti, former State Controller Steve Westly and business man Tom Steyer. I will be in Sacramento this coming weekend for the State Democratic Party convention to hear from each of these and to see where they stand on issues of importance to us here in the valley, such as passenger rail service, environment, etc. And then in June off to Detroit for an Executive Committee meeting of the Democratic national Committee. - who said summer was slow? Desert Winds Freedom Band Presents:“Our American Heritage” Armed Forces Day - Saturday, May 20 (Palm Springs, CA) April 26, 2017… The Desert Winds Freedom Band (DWFB) is proud to present “Our American Heritage,” an Armed Forces Day FREE concert event on Saturday, May 20 at 7:00p.m. Through a generous gift from Mayor Pro-Tem Greg Pettis of Cathedral City, the concert will be held at Palm Desert Civic Center Park. This beautiful expansive park is located at 43900 San Pablo Avenue and has plenty of FREE parking. Enjoy the beautiful balmy summer evening and bring a picnic dinner, chairs and blankets to enjoy a spectacular evening of Americana and Patriotic music dedicated to honoring our men and women in the Armed Forces. Booths and representatives from a variety of Veteran and Armed Forces organizations will be onsite along with a display of a large number of American Flags on loan from The Healing Field. “In honor of Armed Forces Day, I have chosen upbeat and rousing patriotic music representing our country’s military history.
