Day One: 4:00-5:30pm
Objectives
• Build brotherhood and teamship within chapters
• Build energy for the experience
• Start of the institute with high energy, thought provoking challenges
15/15 Moon Ball
Needs
Beach ball
25/40 Traffic Jam
Needs
Members of the group work to keep a beach ball aloft for a specified number of hits. The
activity facilitator may set the goal or the group may set its own goals. After each trial, the
goal may be revised.
Rules:
1. No member of the group may touch the ball twice in succession.
2. Each round of play ends when the ball touches the ground.
If you are catching the ball, you must say your own name. If you are hitting the ball, you
must state the name of the person you are hitting the ball to.
You may add some fun alternatives at the conclusion, such as requiring the members of the
group to hit the ball in sequence, so that everyone must take a turn or give extra points for
hits with head, knees, feet, or elbows.
• Why would we start with this activity?
• What are the primary goals?
• How can this activity influence our time together at Sapphire?
• What are you willing to do to take your cool caps off and to help others do the same?
• Why is it important to build brotherhood at Sapphire?
Paper, Craft Mats, or Carpet Squares
Facilitator should begin by placing participants into two separate, equally numbered groups
and arrange them like the picture below, with each person facing the open, center space.
A – B – C - D – E - ___ - 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 - 5
The goal is to get the ABCDE side to the 12345 side using the following rules:
• No moving backwards
• A person can only move forward to an empty space
• A person cannot “jump over” their own teammate – they must stay in the order and
direction they are in
• Only one person may move at a tie
• One spot per person, no sharing
If any of these rules are broken, the group must begin again
The ending order should look like:
1 – 2 – 3 – 4 - 5 - ____ - A – B – C - D – E
